    Responsibilities
    • Assists with patient personal hygiene and grooming according to hospital procedures in a reasonable amount of time.
    • Changes bed linens and removes soiled linen according to hospital procedure.
    • Assists patients with ambulation, transfer, and repositioning using proper body mechanics and protecting patients from falls or injury.
    • Assists patients with meals and fluid intake; measures totals and documents intake according to hospital procedure.
    • Assists patients with elimination and measures and documents total output according to hospital procedures.
    • Assists with maintaining a clean and safe environment for patients.
    • Assist with special procedures as instructed by the registered nurse and according to hospital procedures.
    • Obtains vital signs following standard procedure (respirations, pulse, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, temperature, pain level) and documents in the electronic medical record per policy
    • Promptly reports any vital sign that is outside of the patient baseline limits as identified by the RN
    • Performs point-of-care blood glucose monitoring following correct policy and procedure guidelines
    • Performs other non-direct patient care activities as assigned.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Pascack Valley Medical Center (PVMC) policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to proper patient care within the scope of responsibility of the Patient Care Assistant (PCA)
    • Demonstrates understating of the role of the PCA in responding to patient care emergencies and other PVMC facility alerts
    • Recognizes the importance of patient satisfaction with each patient and family encounter
    • Promptly reports to the RN any concern relating to patient care safety and patient satisfaction issues
    • Demonstrates understanding of responsibility as a PCA in following relevant policies and procedures to meet the National Patient Safety Goals.
    • Follows the guidance of the RN in ensuring that the established plan of care of the patient is delivered as intended
    • Demonstrates required competencies for the PCA
    • Demonstrates commitment to his or her personal and professional growth by ensuring attendance to educational activities and competency validation program.

    Qualifications

    Job Requirements

    • 1– 2 years patient care experience
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross (ARC) required
    • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
    • Ability to work effectively with members of the health care team
    • Functions under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN)
    • Ability to make report as required by role

    Preferred Job Requirements

    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • Hospital experience
    • Experience with patient safety best practice
