CDL Utilities has an immediate opening for a skilled and reliable Aerial Lineman. This role is critical to supporting the successful installation, maintenance, and upgrade of aerial fiber optic infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate is experienced, safety-focused, and capable of working extended hours, including occasional weekends for emergencies or special project needs.
The Aerial Lineman is responsible for the installation of strand and fiber optic cables on aerial distribution systems. This individual will perform new builds, overlash projects, upgrades, and maintenance work while ensuring safety, quality, and productivity standards are met. The role requires strong technical knowledge of aerial construction practices and the ability to lead or support a crew in the field.
Most of the work is performed outdoors, and candidates must be comfortable working at elevated heights and in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain.
Responsibilities
- Install new strand and perform overlash work
- Lash fiber optic cable (self-supporting and lashed configurations)
- Set up and operate bucket trucks and aerial lifts
- Identify unsafe pole conditions and stop work when required
- Understand and maintain proper clearance, sag, and tension requirements
- Read and interpret construction prints, OSP drawings, redlines, and field documentation
- Lead daily work planning and assign crew tasks when required
- Act as a point of contact with inspectors, utilities, and customers
- Complete daily reports, job photos, and redlines
- Train and mentor junior technicians
- Clearly communicate project delays, material needs, and safety concerns
- Enforce proper PPE usage and safe work practices
- Maintain safe and compliant job sites at all times
Requirements
- 3–5 years of hands-on aerial fiber installation experience
- Experience with strand installation, lashing, over-lashing, and mid-span access
- Experience working on active utility poles in live plant environments
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA and utility safety standards
- Experience working around energized facilities (NESC awareness)
- Valid driver's license
- OSHA 10 certification
- Aerial lift / bucket truck certification
- Utility pole safety and fall protection training
Preferred Qualifications
- 1–2 years of crew leadership experience (lead or senior technician role preferred)
- CDL (Commercial Driver's License)
- OSHA 30 certification
- Proven ability to train and mentor junior technicians
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb poles when required
- Comfortable working at heights for extended periods
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly
- Capable of working extended hours and traveling for extended periods
- Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
