- Designs and executes complex laboratory experiments
- Participates in developing and implementing goals and objectives of studies
- Maintains mouse colony
- Participates in the development and implementation of new and revised research methodologies and techniques
- Tests experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods and make recommendations for utilization
- Assists in establishment of controls, criteria and research standards
- Performs critical analysis of literature relevant to research being undertaken
- Performs basic and advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques including: PCR, tissue culture, DNA/RNA/Protein extraction, and processing tissue for immunotyping
- Collects, analyzes and interprets research data
- Maintains accurate, detailed records of experimental data and protocols
- Conducts critical analysis of research literature related to research being investigated
- Assists in the preparation of manuscripts, research paper, articles, abstracts and research reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals and for presentation at conferences and workshops
- Assist in the writing of project reports, articles and other documents
- Attends and presents at national and international scientific conferences, workshops and seminars
- Assists principal investigator in the development and preparation of grant proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of research
- Participates in developing and managing grant budgets and grant project reports
- Coordinates laboratory activities and work assignments of postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and laboratory research staff
- Oversees and coordinates periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment
- Monitors laboratory expenses
- Ensures compliance with protocol requirements, as well as local, state and federal regulations
- Monitors and enforces laboratory safety procedures to ensure compliance
- Participates in oversight of daily laboratory operations
- Trains and/or supervises other lab staff
- Performs additional duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in an appropriate biological / health science field, or equivalent experience required. Master's Degree preferred.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience required. 3-5 years of relevant experience preferred.
- Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required.
- Experience in a biological/health science research capacity is preferred.
- Experience with animal models and managing a mouse colony is preferred.
- Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen.

Description
The Research Associate 1 participates in planning, designing, execution, and managing research projects occurring simultaneously investigating the molecular and cellular biology of cancer, specifically gastrointestinal cancers using in vitro and mouse models in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory in the Department of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (Dr Zobeida Cruz-Monserrate)
