    About Castelion

Castelion is bringing a new approach to defense development and production: one that focuses on short, iterative design cycles, rapid testing in development, and modern commercial manufacturing strategies for production at scale. We're designing, building, and testing next generation long range strike weapons systems to give America and its Allies a definitive edge and deter future conflicts.

    Mechanical Engineer - Mechanism Design

You are a high output Responsible Engineer who has delivered high reliability, low-cost vehicle mechanisms, drives, and sensors. You will be the owner of the flight control, separation, and launch mechanism architecture and design. You work bottom up and top down to set the performance parameters that close on cost, schedule, and function. You work with cross functional teams to create a design that is robustly sourced, manufactured and integrated.

    Responsibilities

    • Design and Deliver flight control surfaces. Design the kinematics, actuation, materials, and integration plan for high load tightly packaged subsystem
    • Design and Deliver Separation Mechanisms. Responsible for delivering low-cost high reliability separation mechanism for staging and launch hold downs.
    • Test to Failure. Drive testing for life and failure of all moving and frangible systems in flight like environments to quantify margin against all failure modes
    • Full Cycle Ownership. Lead design reviews and own the hardware delivery timeline and success from preliminary design through assembly, deployment, and re-use. Use CAD, finite element analysis, and hand calcs to ensure hardware exceeds customer requirements, whether internal or external.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Bachelor's or advanced degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related discipline.
    • Significant experience designing vehicle mechanisms, drives, and sensors.
    • Prior experience with designs going through thorough flight test campaigns.
    • Effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating with cross-functional teams, presenting design concepts, and documenting work.

    Preferred Skills and Experience

    • Experienced Project Executioner. Demonstrated ability to know when you have enough information to go execute on a design and when to get more information to filter out additional noise. Experience designing and executing integrated tests, overload tests, understanding failure modes, and managing schedule to have hardware ready with time to correct integration issues.
    • Material and Tribology. Proven ability to develop designs with sufficient tolerances, finish, lubrication, and wear-pairs to reduce cost and lead time. A successful candidate will demonstrate how they've thought through failure modes, fail safe designs, and safe human interaction/inspection points on previous safety critical hardware.
    • Vendor interface. Experience managing customers, suppliers, and vendors (motors, drives, sensors, pyros) for high value systems. Willingness to get on site with vendors to solve issues and expedite delivery of parts.

    Additional Requirements

    • Willing and able to work extended hours and/or weekends with minimal notification to meet critical deadlines leading up to major milestones.
    • Able to travel up to 10% on an ongoing basis

All employees are granted long-term stock incentives as part of their employment as Castelion. All employees receive access to comprehensive medial, vision, and dental insurance, and the company offers three weeks of paid time off per year.

    Leadership Qualities

Bias to Action and Creative Problem Solving. Desire and experience questioning assumptions in ways that lead to break through ideas that are ultimately implemented. Successfully bring in applicable processes/concepts/materials from other industries to achieve efficiency gains. Ability to personally resolve minor issues in development without requiring significant support.

High Commitment, High Initiative. A successful candidate will have a genuine passion for Castelion's mission and consistently look for ways to contribute to the company's technical goals and prevent hardware blockers. Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere. Strong sense of accountability and integrity.
