    Description
    Summary Objective

    The purpose of this position is to assist in and/or perform mechanic work in the maintenance, repair, and re-conditioning of City fleet such has automobiles, trucks, and specialized heavy equipment (i.e. sanitation trucks, shuttle bus).


    This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

    This is a multi-position posting.

    Depending upon education, experience and current certifications, candidates may be considered for either a Mechanic I, Mechanic II or Mechanic III vacancy.

    Positions/minimum requirements are defined below, all current certifications must be submitted at the time of application.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.


    • Inspects, diagnoses and performs all phases of independent skilled repair and reconditioning on diversified automobiles, trucks, and specialized heavy equipment.
    • Identify mechanical and electrical problems with both manual and computerized diagnostic equipment.
    • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining and testing vehicles and equipment.
    • Performs preventative maintenance with special attention given to assuring the safety of vehicles and to eliminate premature equipment failure.
    • Performs diagnoses, installations and major repairs of diverse mechanical equipment and parts, including, but not limited to, engine overhaul, brakes, transmissions, clutches, belts, gear boxes, etc.
    • Performs routine maintenance as outlined by the original equipment manufacturer (checking/changing fluids, greasing, lubricating, etc.); service batteries; replaces and/or adjusts headlights, tires, turn signals etc.
    • Repairs cooling, fuel, electrical, hydraulic and exhaust systems; tune engines using standard equipment.
    • Logs all daily work; Maintains record of repairs, parts used, and labor expend per work order; identifies parts and services required to maintain the city's fleet vehicles.
    • Performs welding, fabrication and brazing as required.
    • Assists with the training of lower-level mechanics.
    • Maintains work area and shop in a clean and orderly manner.
    • Inputs repair orders to Broward County Transit for their record keeping of city buses.
    • Operates city vehicles to pick up parts and supplies for repairs at external shops/vendors, to road test vehicles repaired, or to make service calls.
    • May assist with emergency calls and repairs.
    • Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

    MECHANIC I
    Pay Range $ $37.37

    This is the entry level class of the Mechanic series.

    This class is distinguished from the Mechanic II and III by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series.

    Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgement on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II and III level.

    Due to the minimum education and experience requirements, employees may have only limited or non-directly related work experience. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.


    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • High School Diploma (or equivalent) or completion of a vocational training program in the area of automotive or light duty equipment mechanics.
    • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in automotive, light and/or heavy vehicle and equipment repair.
    • Valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License preferred at hire or must obtain within 6 months of employment. Failure to obtain a valid class B commercial driver's license will result in failure to pass the 6-month probationary period and termination.
    • Tool cabinet comprising of basic automotive mechanic tools preferred.

    MECHANIC II
    Pay Range $ $41.20

    This is the Mid-level class of the Mechanic series.

    This class is distinguished from the Mechanic I by the performance of a broader range of tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series.

    Employees at this level are expected to perform with moderate independence and direction and judgement on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the III level.

    Due to the minimum education and experience requirements, employees in this class will have more direct or non-directly related work experience, and pre-requisite ASE certifications.


    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • High School Diploma (or equivalent) or completion of a vocational training program in the area of automotive or light duty equipment mechanics.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in automotive, light and/or heavy vehicle and equipment repair, service and/or maintenance in an automotive, light and/or heavy vehicle equipment repair, service and/or maintenance in a mechanic/fleet shop (public or private sector employer).
    • Valid FL Driver's License with an acceptable driving history.
    • Possess ASE A1, A5, A6 certifications at time of hire; required to obtain outstanding certifications (from the list below) prior to the end of the first year of employment. All ASE certifications must remain valid throughout the duration of employment.
    A7 Air conditioning

    A8 Engine performance

    T2 Diesel engines

    T4 Heavy duty truck brakes

    T8 Preventative inspections

    • Valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License preferred at hire or must obtain within 6 months of employment. Failure to obtain a valid class B commercial driver's license will result in failure to pass the 6-month probationary period and termination.
    • Must possess tool cabinet, hand tools, pneumatic or cordless tools, basic electronic testing equipment and other necessary tools to perform duties expected of this level of a professional automotive technician.

    MECHANIC III
    Pay Range $ $43.27

    This is the Master-level class of the Mechanic series.

    This class is distinguished from the Mechanic I and II by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned within the scope of essential duties of the series, and the ability to work in the absence of supervision.

    Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

    Positions in this class are flexibly staffed, and are filled at the discretion of the City, based on operational need and budget vacancies.

    Due to the minimum education and experience requirements, employees in this class will have direct related work experience in a fleet operation, and ASE Truck Master Technician Certification.


    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • High School Diploma (or equivalent) or completion of a vocational training program in the area of automotive or light duty equipment mechanics.
    • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in automotive, light and/or heavy vehicle and equipment repair, service and/or maintenance in an automotive, light and/or heavy vehicle equipment repair, service and/or maintenance in a mechanic/fleet shop (public or private sector employer).
    • Valid FL Driver's License with an acceptable driving history.
    • Must possess an ASE A- A8 and ASE T- T8 certification at time of hire and maintain said certification throughout employment within this classification.
    • ASE Truck Master Technician Certification
    • Valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License preferred at hire or must obtain within 6 months of employment. Failure to obtain a valid class B commercial driver's license will result in failure to pass the 6-month probationary period and termination.
    • Must possess tool cabinet, hand tools, pneumatic or cordless tools, basic electronic testing equipment and other necessary tools to perform any repair.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of the methods, materials tools and standard practices associated with automobiles, sanitation and other specialized vehicles and equipment.
    • Knowledge of the principals of various mechanical systems of gasoline and diesel engines
    • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions followed in automotive and/or heavy equipment repair shops.
    • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of welding and fabrication.
    • Knowledge of operating and repair characteristics of hydraulic systems.
    • Ability to use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulic hoists, cleaning materials and other tools and equipment used in the service and repair of heavy equipment.
    • Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to work as a team with other employees in a directed work team environment.
    • Ability to conceptualize the work required, through personal observation and verbal description and determine what is necessary to obtain quality results.
    • Ability to perform computerized work order methods and procedures .
    • Ability to drive fleet vehicles and maintain a valid FL driver's license and CDL with endorsements as required.
    • Ability to maintain valid ASE certifications as required.
    • Ability to provide own tools, as required.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.


    • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:


    Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

    WORK HOURS

    • Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm or 12:00pm - 8:30pm
    (May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the City.)
