    POSITION SUMMARY
    A sleep trainee develops the skills and competency in performing basic sleep testing procedures and associated interventions. The sleep trainee works under the direct supervision of a sleep technologist.

    The sleep trainee will complete 25 online self-study modules that are designed to equip the trainee with knowledge and skill needed to excel in the field of sleep technology.

    This preparation is designed to provide the skills and tools you will need to pass the registry exam to become a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.

    The sleep trainee will learn the knowledge of the quality assurance protocols and procedures develop knowledge to learn to perform routine equipment care, maintenance and inventory evaluation.

    Along with following the guidelines for emergency materials management for internal and external events.


    PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

    • Learn and apply adherence to American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) along with the standards that are developed by Joint Commission.
    • Develop skills in collecting, analyzing, and integrating patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history). Learn to review pertinent information from the patient's history and verify the medical order. When patient arrives, verify identification, collect documents and obtain consent for the study, and explain the procedure.
    • Learn to perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify, correct, and document artifact. Learn to document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Learn to implement appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention. The sleep trainee will learn to identify artifact, inadequate signals, and equipment failures.
    • Develop skills in performing patient education and instruction appropriate for home sleep apnea testing. Develop skills in demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and provide age-appropriate patient education.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:
    High School diploma or GED.

    Experience:
    Customer experience in service industry.


    Certification:
    Current: BLS certification.


    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Knowledge of MS word and Excel.
    • Communication - auditory, written and verbal.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:
    One-year post-secondary education.


    Experience:
    Six months of direct patient care experience.

    Certification:
    Basic Dysrhythmia or CCH certificate.


    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    Proficiency in both MS word and Excel. Working level knowledge of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (ADA, Travel, Environment, Noise)


    • Frequently required to stand, holding arms above your head for long periods of time.
    • Required to walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
    • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
    • May be exposed to chemical vapors such as cleaning and disinfecting solutions. There may also be skin contact with these substances. May also be exposed to infectious agents including blood-borne pathogens.
