    Position Description:

    Position

    The Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa (UI) invites applications for an academic-year clinical-track faculty position at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor in the Special Education program. We seek an individual with broad experience in Special Education, including demonstrated proficiency in both academic and behavioral intervention. The successful candidate will demonstrate active engagement in equity, inclusivity, and anti-racist education, which are critical practices within our department and the College of Education.

    This is a full-time academic-year (9 month) clinical track faculty position with an initial three-year appointment beginning August 14, 2024 with possibility of renewal. The clinical track at the University of Iowa has a career progression that includes promotion (assistant, associate, full professor). The College of Education provides support for clinical faculty in professional development, conference travel, and scholarship related to clinical faculty members areas of work. Clinical faculty are expected to teach the equivalent of 3-4 courses per semester and engage in other program-related responsibilities such as curriculum development and student advising.

    This position is essential to addressing the critical need for teachers and specialists prepared in the areas of academic, behavioral, and social-emotional well-being affecting schools across Iowa and the nation.     Responsibilities involve teaching special education courses as well as introductory teacher education coursework; coordinating and supervising field placements for candidates for teacher licensure and/or candidates for our ; advising undergraduate and graduate students seeking teaching licensure and/or behavior analysis certificate; participating in grant activities to secure funding for professional productivity and curriculum development; and establishing connections with departments across the UI campus, local schools, and communities. Faculty are required to engage in at least 4 hours per semester of collaboration with teachers in contributing to instruction in K-12 classrooms. The successful candidate will be involved with local, state, and national activities that support Special Education as well as equity in teacher education. They will also participate in service activities to the program, department, college, and university.

    About the Department, Special Education, and Elementary Education

    The (T & L) at the University of Iowa includes over 40 faculty members and over 1000 students. Within T & L, the has three tenure-track faculty and three clinical-track faculty members. These faculty work with and/or direct prominent centers on campus, including the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health, the Iowa Reading Research Center (IRRC) and UI REACH. Faculty also are actively engaged in local and surrounding areas through school-based research and service activities. The special education program is committed to the research and training of undergraduate and graduate students in serving K-12 students with and at risk for disabilities as they progress through school and transition into life beyond school. We offer two degrees: a with or without thesis and In addition, we offer an added Special Education endorsement for elementary education undergraduate majors. Faculty in Special Education also teach courses in the Elementary Education Program, which provides instruction to over 500 students each year. In Fall 2022, Elementary Education started a new pathway for first year students at UI to begin introductory coursework while maintaining other pathways (community college transfers, changing majors). The Teacher Education Program (TEP) implements Core Principles that ascribe to learning through inquiry, reflection, and collaboration with a commitment to humanizing approaches. These Principles center valuing students identities, developing learners skills and intellect, and engaging in equitable and justice-oriented education.

    The offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including licensure, endorsement, and certificate programs, many of which are regularly ranked among the best in the nation.     Education Requirement:

    An earned doctorate by August 1, 2024 in Special Education or a related discipline.

    Required Qualifications:
  • Successful experience teaching in K-12 settings or in providing academic or behavioral services to K-12 aged individuals with disabilities
  • Evidence of effective instruction in teacher education programs in higher education settings
  • Demonstrated expertise in either academic or behavioral intervention
  • Demonstrated ability to create and foster an academic environment inclusive of culturally, linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse populations.
  • Desirable Qualifications:
  • Licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in K-12 Special Education
  • Experience in building partnerships with local schools and communities
  • Certification in behavior analysis with experience in schools and clinical settings
  • Familiarity with program certification requirements of the Association for Behavior Analysis International
  • A record of securing external funds for research, training, and program development.
