- Confers with principal regarding care and cleaning programs at a school plant, assists in setting up rooms for special events and needs.
- Reports fire, sanitary, and safety hazards, and needed repair work to proper authorities; performs minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment, maintains equipment.
- Sweeps, scrubs, mops, and waxes floors; washes windows; cleans walls, furniture, woodwork, and other equipment.
- May assist in training of inexperienced personnel and monitoring of their work.
- Requisitions custodial supplies and equipment as needed.
- Keeps necessary records and prepares reports.
- Painting inside and outside of buildings with brush, roller, or spraying equipment.
- Installing or repairing fences, doing cement and asphalt work.
- Pruning trees, hoeing weeds, installing and repairing irrigation systems.
- Replacing lights and cleaning light fixtures.
- Shampooing carpets, pulling and pushing equipment, and moving classroom furniture.
- Scrubbing and waxing floors using an electrically powered floor machine.
- Mopping the floor and applying wax with a mop.
- Receiving supplies, moving boxes.
- Doing minor carpentry, electrical, and plumbing work.
- Dusting counters, cleaning windows, and general classroom cleaning.
- Normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required to operate power and motorized equipment using both hands.
- Physical agility to frequently stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull, lift, and move objects up to 50 pounds shoulder height and occasionally lift in excess of 50 pounds with assistance.
- Demonstrate normal depth perception.
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- See and read printed matter, with or without visual aids, distinguish colors, read and understand rules and policies, labels, and instructions.
- Verbal communication including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels.

Our Schools
Ripon Unified comprises five elementary schools, one high school, and one continuation high school. Approximately 2,288 elementary students are divided between the five elementary schools in grades TK through 8. Combined, the two high schools have approximately 1,067 students in grades 9 through 12.
Our Staff
Our certificated staff includes over 150 teachers and itinerants serving regular classroom instruction and special services. Our support staff comprises over 200 employees, including aides, bilingual liaisons, secretaries, custodians, yard duties, and more. Job Description: Building Custodian
Under general supervision, the building custodian plans, schedules, and performs routine cleaning work in school, office, or multi-purpose buildings of the district. During scheduled recesses in the instructional program, they perform routine grounds maintenance and gardening work and do related custodial and maintenance work as required.
The building custodian is also responsible for completing the summer maintenance schedule developed in cooperation with the site administrator and Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds. This includes:

Work Environment
Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments, exposure to dusts, oils, and cleaning chemicals. May work on ladders or scaffolding, may work with exposure to moisture, some exposure to childhood and other diseases in a school environment. Regular contact with Ripon Unified School District Staff, District Office Staff, and the public.
