- Two (2) years relevant professional experience in the field of biological safety.
- The individual must have a background in laboratory research with experience working with recombinant DNA and/or other biohazardous material.
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations pertinent to biosafety, including the Select Agent Final Rule, and the ability to interpret and apply pertinent regulations. Expertise in other areas, such as infectious waste management.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid molecules (NIH Guidelines).
- Demonstrated knowledge of biosafety principles and procedures.
- Demonstrated understanding of the publication titled Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL latest edition).
- Knowledge of trends in biosecurity in academic research-intensive environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge in the recognition, evaluation, and control of biohazardous materials including handling, identification, storage and disposal.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct laboratory inspections/audits and safety reviews.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with a diverse audience of professionals.
- Ability to maintain professional standards under routine conditions of severe and non-negotiable time constraints.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in an organized manner while carrying out tasks accurately.
- Ability to wear/use personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection.
- Proficient computer skills, which includes word processing (MS Office applications) and database applications.
- Ability to develop and present educational programs to a diverse constituency. Thus, teaching/training experience required.

Job Summary:
The Biological Safety Officer (BSO) works within a team environment to manage a comprehensive biological safety program that ensures compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, policies, and directives, including those issued by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The incumbent is responsible for facilitating the efficient and effective operation of the Oklahoma State University-Stillwater (OSU) and Oklahoma State University-Tulsa (OSU-T) biosafety program, including daily oversight, implementation, and administration of relevant policies and procedures.
The BSO helps to ensure that the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) meets its responsibilities. The BSO provides guidance to members of the IBC and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).The BSO corroborates that standard operating procedures (SOPs) regarding biosafety and biosecurity are followed, while working to ensure minimal risk to the environment, to animals, and to personnel working with biohazardous materials.
The BSO handles regulatory reporting and interacts with personnel of federal agencies, personnel of affiliated institutions, and University personnel to achieve a comprehensive biosafety program.

Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Food/Animal Science, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree, or a Ph.

Professional or doctoral applicants in the preferred fields may substitute doctoral academic research and course work for work experience.
