Job DescriptionSummary: The Machinist II (MII) programs and operates a variety of CNC machine tools to perform progressive machining operations on a diversified line of close tolerance work requiring a high degree of skill and machining techniques. May set-up for and instruct less experienced Machinists, troubleshoot and make adjustments. Usually specializes in one machining discipline (Milling, Turning, VTL, or Boring Bar).

Essential Roles and Responsibilities
• Programs, sets-up and operates CNC boring bars, CNC boring mills, large CNC milling and turning machines, CNC grinders, special purpose CNC machines, etc.
• Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces, sequence of operations and set-up requirements.
• Using a variety of precision measuring equipment, measures, marks and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
• Creates offline and edits CNC programs; dry run, debug and edit CNC programs at machine.
• Selects, aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders and shapers.
• Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media, under supervision.
• Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
• Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
• Grinds and adapts tooling and attachments for special work requirements.
• Works with large and expensive parts or smaller parts of a complicated nature having critical and exacting requirements as to tolerance and finish.
• Diagnoses and rectifies tooling problems and machine malfunctions under supervision.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities but provides indirect leadership to other machinists.
Competencies Required
The MII has mastered some aspects of precision CNC machining; has a knowledge of materials both ferrous and non-ferrous along with machining speeds and feeds; able to use and interpret information supplied by various measuring instruments; able to read, understand and modify CNC machining programs and able to use of forklifts, cranes and hand trucks.

Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or GED. Technical certificate from a trade school and/or more than three years of machining experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings and blueprints, instructions, schedules, procedures, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports or correspondence.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; able to apply the concepts of algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense to execute instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Deal with complex problems involving several variables.
Computer Skills and Abilities
Ability to use CNC controls and associated computers for program transfer; ability to research drawings in drawing database program; ability to use computer software to report labor on shop orders.
