    About the Role

    This position will be located at the Cambridge, MA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely. This position will require 1% travel as defined by the business (domestic and/ or international).

    In this role, you play a key role in the statistical aspects of our pre-clinical research and drug discovery programs. You will lead the implementation of modern and innovative experimental designs, statistical models, analysis and data exploration methodologies for pre-clinical studies and experiments, in collaboration with researchers and bench scientists, and other quantitative partners in the drug discovery teams.

    Your Key Responsibilities: (include, but are not limited to):

    • In collaboration with cross-functional researchers and bench scientists, provide quantitative, scientific, and strategic input to support the execution of the pre-clinical development strategies.

    • Contribute to planning, execution, analysis, interpretation, and communication of pre-clinical studies and experiments, to facilitate internal decision making, publications and support regulatory interactions.

    • Drive and promote the use of best-practice and innovative statistical approaches within Biomedical Research, through scientific collaborations, publications in scientific peer reviewed journals and presentations at professional meetings.

    • Contribute to departmental initiatives (e.g., infrastructure/ process-related or scientific activities)

    • Contribute to the scientific content of materials for internal decision boards/regulatory/submission documents: INDs, IBs, decision criteria, experimental design(s), responses to Health Authority questions.

    • Collaborate with other line functions. Explain statistical concepts in an easily understandable way to non-statisticians and provide adequate statistical justifications and interpretation of analysis results for actions/decisions/statements, when required.

    • Support training of bench scientists on fundamental statistical concepts.

    Role Requirements

    Role Requirements:

    • PhD or M.S. degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, data science, or other quantitative discipline
    Principal Biostatistician: PhD with 0+ years or M.S. with 4+ years
    Senior Principal Biostatistician: PH.D with 3+ years or M.S. with 7+ years; Level will commensurate with experience.

    • Strong foundation in biostatistics, with proficiency in a wide range of statistical analysis methods, including experimental design, parametric and non-parametric methods, Bayesian methods, regression analysis (GLMMs and all special cases thereof), survival analysis, categorical data analysis, and machine learning.

    • Strong programming skills in either R or SAS. Demonstrated knowledge of data visualization and exploratory analysis.

    • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the potential to be an ambassador for the Analytics function.

    • An intrapreneurial mindset, with a drive to find and solve problems to demonstrate impact and value.

    Desirable Requirements:

    • Experience working in a pharmaceutical or biotech company, with knowledge of drug development processes and applicable regulatory guidelines. Prior exposure to pre-clinical research.

    • Working knowledge GraphPad Prism, Python, JMP, Spotfire.

    • Experience developing web-based applications (e.g. Shiny), good coding practice, source code management (Git, bitbucket)

    Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $138,800 – $205,200/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered.
