Computational Biologist - New York - Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

    $70,000 - $140,000 (USD) per year * Healthcare
    Description

Join our team to bring the power of high-resolution genomics to the study and treatment of pediatric cancers. The Computational Oncology Program and Department of Pediatrics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center are joining forces to recruit a Senior Staff Scientist with deep expertise in cancer genomics to lead a foundational computational biology initiative that will accelerate discovery and clinical translation of pediatric cancer genome and transcriptome sequencing. You will join a world-leading interdisciplinary team of computational scientists, molecular biologists, and clinicians working together to uncover the molecular foundations of pediatric cancers and accelerate the translation of genomic discoveries into improved treatment options.

In this role, you will work directly with genomic data from patients under active treatment at MSKCC, contributing to analyses that help characterize each child's disease in near real time. You will also play a key role in developing and applying new computational approaches to interrogate cancer genomes using state-of-the-art technologies, including single-cell whole genome and rna sequencing, single cell multiome sequencing, long-read sequencing, and cell-free DNA sequencing. Your projects will span multiple dimensions of translational cancer genomics—from developing new approaches for disease monitoring using cell-free DNA to investigating the mechanistic and evolutionary basis of pediatric cancers in patient-derived xenografts.

This position sits at the interface of discovery-based and clinical research. Your work will contribute both to the development of methods that redefine how we study cancer genomes and to the translation of those insights into strategies that may ultimately improve outcomes for children with cancer.

    What you will do:

    • Work with physician-scientists to analyze sequencing data from pediatric cancer patients to better understand disease progression and treatment options
    • Engage deeply with bulk and single-cell sequencing datasets to explore novel, clinically relevant questions
    • Develop computational methods to analyze data generated by cutting-edge single-cell and long-read technologies
    • Contribute to high-impact journal articles and gain recognition through authorship
    • Submit abstracts and travel to conferences to present your work
    • Research new developments in computational biology and apply these methods to new datasets

    Who you are:

    • Someone with a deep fascination with molecular and cell biology
    • Intrinsically motivated by a desire to advance science and make a positive societal impact
    • Excited by new data and the opportunity for discovery
    • Detail-oriented, able to identify anomalies in data and quickly uncover their source
    • Capable of building strong collaborative relationships and delivering research-centric solutions
    • A good decision-maker, with proven success making timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward
    • Resilient in recovering from setbacks and skilled at finding detours around obstacles
    • Adept at learning quickly and applying insights from past efforts to new situations

    Who we are:

    • We are a team of passionate scientists and software engineers dedicated to scientific advancement with material impact on cancer treatment
    • We thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where innovation and teamwork drive our success
    • We value continuous learning, support one another's growth, and celebrate diverse perspectives as a source of strength and creativity
    • We are committed to building a culture of mutual respect, curiosity, and shared achievement

    Requirements:

    • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Computer Science, with an emphasis on applications in molecular biology
    • Proficiency in data analysis using modern packages in Python and/or R
    • Experience with Linux and the command line
    • Familiarity with Git and collaborative software development workflows
    • Experience working with high-throughput sequencing data
    • Experience with single-cell genomics

    How to Apply:

If you are interested, please email and add [COMPBIO2026] in the subject line. Please include the following information in your email:

    • A link to 1–2 papers that exemplify your contribution to science, along with a brief description of your specific contribution to each
    • Examples of your code on GitHub that would allow us to evaluate your computational skills
    • Your CV as an attachment
