    The Position

    The Senior Scientist will provide scientific leadership in the identification and validation of new drug targets, advancing novel therapies to the clinic, and developing technologies to accelerate scientific research. This will be achieved by proposing and leading internal and external research efforts to support project goals. The Senior Scientist will represent the organization as a subject matter expert to the external scientific community through the publication and presentation of research, and through the development, management, and leadership of external collaborations. The individual will be seen across the company and beginning to be viewed externally as a method/subject expert for one or two technologies or area(s) of biology.

    Relationships

    Reports to the Senior Director, Metabolic Regulation

    Internal relationships include working closely with technical staff & other members of the scientific leadership team; regular collaborations with members of other research departments at NNRCSI; & frequent interaction with project managers & other colleagues across global R&D. Individual may direct the work of other staff members.

    Individual will interact with external research collaborators both academia- & industry-based.

    Essential Functions

  • Experimental guidance & hands-on effort
  • Propose, plan, and execute complex, diverse projects that require a strong technical and scientific understanding of research area
  • Provide expert-level guidance to experimental plans and data interpretation
  • Troubleshoot highly complex tasks through independent and team-based efforts
  • Demonstrate deep subject matter expertise and in-depth experience, as well as creative, independent thinking and solutions for addressing critical scientific questions
  • Plan, execute, and analyze in vitro & in vivo experiments
  • Make independent decisions related to day-to-day experimental activities
  • Assume responsibility for project design, implementation, and interpretation
  • Analyze complex data with high degree of sophistication, connect disparate datasets to reach conclusions, and communicate project updates and experimental results to relevant stakeholders
  • Ensure proper documentation of all experiments and data
  • Collaborative teamwork
  • Function as project leader for global, cross-functional experimental teams to achieve project goals
  • Communicate regularly with international colleagues within Novo Nordisk
  • Indirectly supervise and provide mentorship to Research Assistants, Associates, & junior Scientists
  • Actively participate in cross-functional teams to drive project success
  • Actively participate in virtual global team meetings regularly
  • Achieve business goals, share learnings, knowledge and skills & promote cross-functional teamwork
  • Share knowledge & expertise to expand team capabilities and goals
  • Demonstrate superior cross-cultural understanding to effectively interact with relevant stakeholders in the global organization
  • Scientific input & documentation
  • Recommend, present, and champion new targets or methodologies
  • Propose and lead external research efforts to support project goals
  • Write and review collaborative research manuscripts, project documents, and milestone documents
  • Identify biology-, target-, or technology-focused gaps and questions & be able to propose solutions for long-term benefit of department, site, or company
  • Complete assignments requiring expert-level knowledge of techniques and practices related to the research area
  • Represent the organization as NN-subject matter expert by attending and presenting at scientific conferences and global meetings Qualifications
  • PhD required. Degree with biology and life science preferred
  • 6+ years' relevance experience
  • Relevant required experience includes: Scientific expertise in metabolic diseases of obesity, diabetes, MASH and CVD, experience in drug discovery of which from the pharmaceutical or related industry
  • Preferred experience includes: Experience with target identification and validation, drug discovery for metabolic diseases. In depth knowledge of metabolic pathways and whole-body energy metabolism.
