- Assess the education needs of pediatric and adult patients with diabetes and their families/support network and provide educational support.
- Utilize standardized and develop customized teaching tools and methodologies to measure patient and family/support network knowledge and skills in diabetes concepts and skills, including insulin pump therapy.
- Provide comprehensive teaching in all aspects of diabetes management, including insulin training, meter and/or glucose sensor training.
- Communicate effectively and organize daily activities between consult services to support patient's discharge needs or other inpatient or outpatient needs.
- Assess the education needs of employees within the area of responsibility.
- Utilize standardized and develop customized assessment tools and testing methodologies to measure staff knowledge and skill in core nursing practices and within specialty areas.
- Collect data on employee learning needs through observation, interviewing, focus groups, and instrumentation.
- Interpret the hospital's strategic imperatives, policies, guidelines, and internal demands to design education supporting these goals.
- Plan and design various educational activities based on the needs assessment.
- Collaborate with key staff to develop an annual educational calendar.
- Design core nursing competencies across clinical expertise using essential criteria such as clinical judgment, advocacy/moral agency, caring practices, facilitation of learning, collaboration, systems thinking, response to diversity, clinical inquiry, and contemporary standards of practice and care.
- Implement education activities.
- Foster a cultural environment that promotes learning.
- Conduct various learning events based on needs assessment findings using different teaching strategies.
- Evaluate education and training activities using appropriate tools and testing methodology to assess changes in learners' knowledge, skills, and clinical practice.
- Perform other assigned duties.
- BSN required.
- Current RN Illinois license.
- Minimum of three years of relevant clinical practice.
- Knowledge of pediatric and adult diabetes concepts and skills in all aspects of diabetes management, including insulin pump therapy.
- Ability to work with children, adults, and families of various backgrounds.
- Knowledge and application of patient education/learning principles.
- Knowledge and application of adult learning principles.
- Demonstrated leadership skills through roles like charge nurse, preceptor, or episodic teacher.
- Complex decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Certification as Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) strongly preferred; required to achieve within 18 months if not currently CNE.
- Master of Science in Nursing or related education field preferred.
- Previous experience as an educator.
- Previous experience working in multidisciplinary teams or nursing leadership committees.

A Clinical Nurse Educator, a nurse with prior educational experience, focuses on staff development and nursing education. This professional serves as an educator, consultant, role model, staff/patient advocate, change agent, leader, and cost-effective practitioner.
In collaboration with nursing leadership, the Clinical Nurse Educator designs, develops, implements, and evaluates various educational programs to enhance nursing care and clinical/organizational outcomes.
The Clinical Nurse Educator enhances the standard of professional nursing practice at UCM by nurturing and guiding staff to excel as expert clinicians and leaders.
In this role, the Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) is responsible for providing adult and pediatric patient education on diabetes concepts and skills, including insulin pump therapy. The CNE collaborates with nursing, endocrinology, and nutritional services, as well as other healthcare professionals, to deliver patient services and provide educational and skills training for nurses and healthcare professionals.
