- Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
- Assist the Director with maintenance of various funds and accounts including coordinating and reviewing work to ensure it is completed in a timely and accurate manner
- Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures related to Accounting Department.
- Prepare and review financial statements to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting policies
- Assist with preparation of Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
- Prepare variance explanations on monthly financial statements and other special reports for Director of Accounting, CFO, and other senior management
- Prepare for the annual external financial audit by assisting the Director of Accounting with compiling and reviewing various schedules as required
- Assist Director of Accounting in monitoring work of staff
- Instruct staff on office procedures, technical accounting issues, and applications of various rules, regulations, and accounting procedures
- Prepare and review of assigned general ledger and bank account reconciliations; assist other staff with reconciliation issues
- Coordinate escheat process including annual filing and due diligence requirements
- Collaborate with stakeholders to identify areas for process improvement
- Assists with school audits when necessary
- Perform related work as assigned or required
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as well as methods and practices of budgeting, finance, and governmental accounting
- Knowledge of state laws relating to fiscal control and budgetary guidelines
- Skilled in Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel, including advanced knowledge of designing and modifying spreadsheets, formulas, and pivot tables within Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to interpret and apply pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
- Ability to establish and implement standard accounting and office operational procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish/maintain positive relationships and work collaboratively
- Ability to compile, analyze, interpret, and report findings on financial statements, documents, and reports
- Ability to manage time and stay focused in a multi-tasking environment while maintaining attention to accuracy and detail.

- Ability to work independently, confidentially, and with discretion.
- Ability to train and assist other employees as needed
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field
- Five (5) years of experience in Accounting or related field
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Valid Certified Public Accountant certificate preferred
- Possess and maintain a NC Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation
- Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
- Work requires the occasional exertion of up to ten pounds of force
- Work regularly requires the exchange of accurate and detailed information through oral and written communication
- Constantly operates a computer and other office business equipment
- Ability to remain in stationary position for required meetings/work
- Ability to move to other work locations
- Visual acuity requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities

General Definition of Work
The senior accountant, under general supervision, performs technical accounting work including financial statement preparation and analysis, year-end close responsibilities, external audit coordination, report preparation, and special projects. Assists in planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing the financial activities of the Accounting Department. This position requires a high level of independence, critical thinking, accuracy, and confidentiality.
