    Description

    The Physician Assistant (PA) supports the clinical operation of the AdventHealth Rocky Mountain Region Cardiovascular Service Line with a primary focus on clinical services in the inpatient and outpatient setting at our Littleton facility.

    Inpatient duties:

    • Pre-operative admission, consultation, evaluation and medical optimization
    • Intra-operative 1st and 2nd assistance
    • Post-operative ICU and floor patient care and discharge
    • Assist with Cardiothoracic Surgery including CABG, Valve Repair and Replacement, Aortic Procedures, Thoracotomy, Lung Resections, and Central/Peripheral Vascular repair
    • Conduit Harvest, including greater and lesser saphenous veins and radial artery, Sternotomy & Sternal closure, ECMO initiation/weaning and cannulation/decannulation techniques
    • Insertion of percutaneous/open chest tubes, arterial lines & femoral/axillary IABP, Fem/SC/IJ Central venous access, PA catheter placement, transvenous pacer wires, and dialysis catheters o Documenting, coding and completing diagnosis of patient's condition to facilitate appropriate insurance reimbursement

    Outpatient duties:

    • Pre & post Operative clinic
    • Out-of-hospital patient clinical phone call management & out-of-hospital operative call-in.
    • Delivery of patient care will be conducted in collaboration with faculty surgeons and physicians.

    Basic PA duties:

    • Gather relevant health & medical history
    • Performance of physical examinations
    • Collection, interpretation & recording of clinical data
    • Ordering/specimen collection for/interpretation of all relevant laboratory/microbiological tests;
    • Ordering/interpretation of all relevant radiologic/US/MRI/NM studies
    • Ordering/performance of/interpretation of cardiac diagnostic testing
    • Development of treatment plans, ordering medications
    • Address the pharmacologic needs of patients by CPOE/written/oral methods
    • Perform rounds and recording of computerized progress/consult/procedure notes
    • Participate in clinical & multidisciplinary rounds
    • Admission of patients at the direction of the supervising physician
    • Consultation/referral to other health professionals & community agencies
    • Provide relevant patient education and counseling regarding heath status, test results, disease process and discharge planning
    • Address patient psychosocial needs by assessing patient's functional status & evaluating patient's mental status
    • Assessing clinical factors including, but not limited to, immunosuppression complications, drug toxicity, infections complications and risk rejection
    • Serve as an expert resource and point-of-contact on clinical and protocol-related issues
    • Participate in the preparation of action plans in response to recommendations for improvement and deficiencies identified by regulatory agencies
    • Participate in mock surveys and self-assessments, focusing on continual readiness
    • Actively participate in outstanding customer service and accept responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all with administrative guidance and physician collaboration

    Knowledge & Experience Preferred:

    • Surgical 1st assistance training & proficiency
    • Bedside cardiothoracic surgical procedural skills
    • Cardiothoracic anatomic and patho-physiologic knowledge
    • Invasive bedside procedures
    • Robotic surgical training
    • Cardiothoracic & critical care clinical management knowledge, with sound clinical judgement, decision-making and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to self-direct and work without direct supervision
    • Central Venous Line Access, Arterial line placement, PA catheter placement, open tube thoracostomy
    • Conduit Vein harvesting open/endoscopic
    • Conduit Arterial harvesting open
    • Inpatient surgical service cooperative participation skills
    • Strong interpersonal and written & verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain effective relationships/flexibility with patients, families & all multidisciplinary team members
    • Computer skills & ability to work effectively across multiple electronic medical record platforms (MS Office Platform)
    • Ability to work in a high-stress environment with effective time-management skills and adaptability to change
    • Strong organizational, problem-solving and customer service skills, with a commitment to quality & safety
    • Initiative to keep abreast of new information/products/developments within the specialty

    Education and Experience Required:

    • Masters and 2+ years experience
    • Graduate of a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
    • Minimum of two years post-graduation clinical experience or one-year post-graduate surgical residency training experience
    • Minimum of one year of cardiothoracic specialty specific experience
    • Pre-Operative, Intra-Operative, Post-operative Surgical patient care experience
    • Critical care experience PREFERRED

    Licensure, Certification OR Registration Required:

    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification
    • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • Physician Assistant
