Position Summary:

The Database Architect performs SQL Server database administration including performance tuning, backup and recovery, security administration, and capacity planning while also designing and maintaining scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines to ingest, process, and transform data across the organization's systems.

This position develops and optimizes stored procedures, manages index strategies, and conducts execution plan analysis to ensure database reliability and performance.

The role also builds and maintains reports and dashboards using Python, SSRS and Tableau, supporting an active migration from legacy SSRS reporting to Tableau to modernize the organization's business intelligence capabilities.

The Database Architect implements and monitors data quality controls to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency across systems, and develops data masking and sanitization procedures to prepare production data for use in test and development environments.

This position ensures strict compliance with data governance policies, HIPAA, and ePHI regulations within a healthcare context, and collaborates with analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to translate data requirements into technical solutions.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Perform SQL Server Database Administration (DBA) duties including database maintenance, performance tuning, backup/recovery management, security administration, and capacity planning using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).
• Design, develop, and maintain reports using SSRS and Tableau to support business intelligence and analytics needs, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of data insights to stakeholders.
• Administer and optimize SQL Server databases including index management, query performance tuning, execution plan analysis, and stored procedure optimization. Manage SSRS report server and improve reliability of reporting.
• Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
• Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines (ETL/ELT) to ingest, process, and transform data. Deploy and maintain dashboards using Python and Tableau, migrating existing SSRS reports where applicable.
• Implement and monitor data quality checks, ensuring data accuracy, completeness, and consistency across systems.
• Troubleshoot data-related issues, perform root cause analysis (RCA), and implement fixes to ensure data pipeline reliability and performance.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical documentation, including data dictionaries, data flow diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
• Develop and execute data sanitization and masking procedures to prepare production data for use in downstream test and development environments, ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations while maintaining data utility for testing purposes.
• Ensure adherence to data governance policies and maintain strict compliance with data security and privacy regulations, particularly HIPAA and ePHI standards within a healthcare context.
• Participate in an on-call rotation schedule for critical data infrastructure support as needed.
• Support incident management processes for data-related events.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Proven experience as a Data Engineer, SQL Server DBA, Database Developer, or similar role with hands-on database administration responsibilities.
• Strong proficiency in SQL and hands-on experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for database administration, particularly Microsoft SQL Server and Postgres.
• Experience developing ETL/ELT processes using tools like SSIS, Python, or other relevant technologies.
• Understanding of data warehousing concepts, data modeling techniques (star schema, snowflake schema).
• Strong report building and development experience with BI and visualization tools; Tableau experience is highly desirable, and SSRS experience is valuable for the migration process.
• Proficiency in Python, C# and SQL
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Understanding of data security best practices and compliance requirements (knowledge of HIPAA is crucial).
• A well-organized and self-directed individual capable of working with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays in alignment with departmental and industry.

Education/Experience:

• High school diploma with at least 3 years of relevant Programming or Data Engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience in managing cloud-native applications and infrastructure.
• Proven experience in deploying and managing containerized applications in a production environment.

Preferred Skill/Abilities

• Experience with data masking, anonymization, and sanitization techniques for preparing test environment datasets. Debezium CDC processing a plus.
• Direct experience migrating data workloads from on-premises SQL Server/SSRS to AWS/Tableau.
• Experience working within the Healthcare industry.
• Familiarity with healthcare data standards (HL7, FHIR) and potentially
• AWS Certification(s) (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics - Specialty, AWS Certified Solutions Architect).

• Experience with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform).

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

• This is a full-time remote position.
• Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time.
