- Interviews, selects, supervises, develops, and if necessary, counsels personnel according to established COSA policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Plans and prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of staff involved in the repair of vehicles and equipment.
- Ensures cleanliness and safety of supervised service center by ensuring all safety procedures and practices are observed.
- Monitors and interacts with City vendors to ensure contract compliance and inspects vendors' work to ensure completion of repairs.
- Instructs personnel in new or complex heavy equipment repair and maintenance procedures and techniques.
- Plans, directs, and evaluates operations and activities and develops recommendations for service improvements and modifications.
- Keeps apprised of repair techniques to improve maintenance/repair capabilities and minimize vehicle downtime.
- Researches methods to improve service and establish a standard repair schedule.
- Builds relationships with other departments, divisions, and sections by coordinating heavy equipment maintenance/repair work, minimizing downtime, and ensuring excellent customer service.
- Receives, inspects, and issues new vehicles and heavy equipment to departments.
- Ensures availability of tools, supplies, and parts; ensuring stock orders are completed as needed so that supplies are available.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
- Six (6) years' experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, including three (3) years in a lead role in automotive repair shop.
- Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License

- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

- Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
- Knowledge of the operation of a variety of automotive systems, accessories and parts of systems and how they are removed, installed and maintained.
- Knowledge of various types of motors and equipment and their operation, maintenance, and repair.
- Knowledge of procedures for diagnosing motor or systems failure and the steps necessary to correct the condition.
- Knowledge of mechanical tools and testing devices used in a heavy equipment maintenance operation.
- Skill in diagnosing automotive related problems.
- Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
- Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
- Ability to organize preventive maintenance and mechanical repair work based on information gathered from operator or department.
- Ability to use Fleet Management/Work order system.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
- Ability to prepare and analyze heavy equipment maintenance reports.
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
- Working conditions are primarily inside an office and shop environment.
