    JOB DETAILS:

    Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics, to begin August 19, 2024. We are seeking a dynamic individual committed to undergraduate teaching and guiding students interested in statistics-related careers.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum / Required
    • PhD in Statistics or closely related field required by August 2024 (all areas of statistical expertise will be considered).
    Highly Desired/Preferred
    • Evidence of teaching ability.
    • Commitment to teaching undergraduate statistics courses.
    • Strong interest in supporting students pursuing a career in Actuarial Science and/or Data Science.
    • Interest in involving undergraduate students in research.
    • Interest in teaching graduate courses.
    • Demonstrated success working with diverse student populations.
    • Commitment to cultivating a work environment and student experience that embraces inclusion.
    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Teach lower and upper-level courses in statistics and occasionally lower-level courses in mathematics. Involvement in curriculum development; research and scholarly activity; academic advisement; course and program assessment of student learning; and service to the department and the university are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair.

    DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

    The Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Department has 32 full-time members, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and related areas. The department received the 2008 University of Wisconsin System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Departments and Programs. The department is committed to student-centered and technology-enhanced instruction. Technology usage includes students working on laptops in the classroom, web enhancements (e.g., course management and on-line homework systems), and interactive distance education courses. Faculty members involve undergraduate students in research and the department has hosted an NSF-sponsored REU site in Mathematics in the past. We have a strong tradition of actively participating in the Mathematical Association of America Wisconsin Section meetings and serving on the executive board. The department currently holds the position of Chair of Mathematical Association of America Wisconsin Section. The faculty members in the department also helped organize the 2023 Spring Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America Wisconsin Section held on April 28-29th, 2023 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

    The department offers all the core courses necessary for the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (~111 students), Computer Science (~462 students), Cybersecurity (~79), and Computer Networking and Information Technology (~102) programs as well as coursework supporting five Engineering programs (~850 students). There is a long-standing concentration in Actuarial Science and Data Science available under the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science program. The department also provides service courses (in all three disciplines: statistics, mathematics, and computer science) for the numerous programs within the university. Typical statistics class size is about 35 students. The department also has a Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics and Data Science. Opportunities for teaching statistics to graduate students (both from the Master's in Applied Mathematics and Data Science and from several other programs) will be available.
