- Preoperative Assessment and Preparation:
- Conduct thorough preoperative assessments of patients, including medical history review, vital signs assessment, and verification of surgical consents.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare team members to develop individualized care plans based on patient needs and surgical requirements.
- Educate patients and their families about the surgical process, postoperative care instructions, and discharge expectations.
- Intraoperative Support:
- Assist in the preparation of the operating room (OR) by ensuring all necessary equipment, supplies, and medications are available and properly set up.
- Provide direct patient care during surgical procedures, including monitoring vital signs, administering medications as directed, and assisting the surgical team as needed.
- Maintain a sterile field and adhere to aseptic techniques to prevent surgical site infections and ensure patient safety.
- Postoperative Care and Discharge Planning:
- Monitor patients closely in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) or recovery area, assessing vital signs, pain levels, and surgical site condition.
- Manage postoperative pain through appropriate interventions and medication administration, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members to develop and implement individualized discharge plans, including patient education, follow-up appointments, and home care instructions.
- Documentation and Communication:
- Accurately document all nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses in electronic medical records (EMR) or other documentation systems.
- Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perioperative staff, and other healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care and optimal patient outcomes.
- Quality Improvement and Compliance:
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and compliance activities related to outpatient surgery, including infection control measures, patient safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Stay informed about current evidence-based practices, guidelines, and advancements in outpatient surgical nursing through continuing education and professional development activities.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Previous experience as a registered nurse is not required but is preferred.
- Previous health care experience in an acute or clinic setting is preferred.
- One year of prior experience in a similar role with a similar scope is preferred.
- Current license as an RN in North Carolina.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - BLS from the American Heart Association is required at the time of hire.
- All required certifications must be obtained within 1 year of hire date, except Basic Life Support (BLS).
- BLS, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications must be obtained from American Heart Association.
