    Summary



    The Batavia VA Medical Center is recruiting for Licensed Practical Nurses for the Geriatric and Extended Care Department (GEC) .

    This is an open continuous announcement until September 30, 2023. Qualified applicants will be considered and referred as vacancies become available. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS 3 - GS 6.



    Duties


    VA Careers - Licensed Practical Nurse:

    The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse and displays knowledge and ability in providing a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems at the Batavia VAMC. The LPN serves as a responsible member of the nursing team and interacts with patients, family members, professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care, and with members of other services.

    The LPN functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team, participates in providing holistic care to patients in acute, sub-acute or chronic stages of illness with changing nursing needs that are predictable and require periodic assessment by the registered nurse. The incumbent carries out all functions and duties outlined for the practical nurse, but on a regular and recurring basis performs aspects of nursing care that require a basic understanding of the total patient program, understanding of simple scientific facts and principles, a broad spectrum of technical skills, adaptation of procedures to meet individual patient needs, and recognition of the relatedness of patients' behavior and physical condition.

    Duties Include However Are Not Limited to The Following:

    • Maintaining positive patient/family/staff relationships by utilizing appropriate communication skills.
    • Assisting in the collection and documentation of objective and subjective data relative to more complex patient situations.
    • Participating in patient centered conferences/shift reports, and contributing information for the development and review of nursing's plan of care. (Collaborating with the Registered Nurse in developing, selecting the appropriate sequence of procedures and implementing a plan of care individualized to carry out the nursing needs of the patient)
    • Maintaining a clean, safe and therapeutic environment and reporting potential and actual hazards to the registered nurse. Adhering to all safety and health standards, regulations, and work practices.
    • Assisting with routine diagnostic measures, such as lumbar puncture, preparation for radiological or operative procedure, etc.
    • Recognizing emergent situations and initiating appropriate intervention. Initiates CPR when indicated and maintains BLS certification.
    • Providing a full range of practical nursing care as appropriate to area of assignment.
    • Assisting with monitoring prescribed therapies (e.g. oxygen therapy), and implementation of the treatment program
    • Administering selected medications, including psychotropic drugs, seeking clarification of orders as necessary. Identifying the need for PRN medications and recognizing, reporting and documenting effects of medications. Documenting administration of all medications in the Medical Record following established policies. Documenting the response to prn medications in the Medical Record according to policy and procedure.
    • Assisting in orienting patients/family/staff to unit routines and pertinent VAWNYHS and Network 2 policies.
    • Completes all mandatory requirements and appropriate competencies before the due date for the areas in which they are assigned.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

    Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

    Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

    Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

    Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
