    The Department of Emergency Medicine within the University of Washington's School of Medicine (SoM) has an outstanding opportunity for an Continuing Education Specialist within the Michael K. Copass, MD Paramedic Training Program. The Paramedic Training Program (PMT) involves a dynamic environment. PMT is hosted at Harborview Medical Center (HMC) and by the Seattle Fire Department (SFD). The objective of PMT is to educate and train paramedic students to attain advanced knowledge, experience, and skills to evaluate and effectively treat medical emergencies in the pre-hospital setting as mobile intensive care paramedics. Secondarily, it is the role of PMT to supervise and manage all currently certified King County paramedics as the single EMS Provider Supervisory Organization.

    The University of Washington's Department of Emergency Medicine within the School of Medicine has a workforce of over 200, with 100+ faculty members who are known for their outstanding research, teaching and patient care. The Department conducts its activities at the Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake, UW Medical Center-Northwest, with research sites located at multiple sites across Seattle.

    The Continuing Education Specialist – 6 is responsible for the organization of and onsite management of Paramedic Training Program educational activities based at Harborview Medical Center. Staff and faculty interact with the public and other government agencies extensively in community-based educational exercises. This program has a national reputation for the state-of-the-art curriculum and training provided by its faculty and staff in the education of Critical Care Paramedics?

    The Continuing Education Specialist – 6 is responsible for the training of PMT students and the logistical management of a 24/7 training environment, requiring RN-level specialized knowledge of paramedic training program needs. These duties include, but are not limited to, the management of simulation training and applicable training equipment, curriculum development and execution, continuing medic education, planning and scheduling of didactic sessions, simulation training sessions, and field exercises. The Continuing Education Specialist – 6 will be expected to support recruitment efforts for each class. They will mentor and consult with students and instructors in a variety of training settings?

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    King County Paramedic Recertification Project Management: (35%)

    •Organize and support Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support classes.

    •Directly manage ongoing training of King County Paramedics, including curriculum development, execution of drills, and educational offerings.

    •Facilitate advanced airway laboratory for University of Washington graduate paramedics.

    •Develop and implement comprehensive project plans with timelines, milestones, and deliverables.

    •Coordinate with stakeholders to define project goals, objectives, and scope.

    •Monitor project progress and make adjustments for timely completion.

    •Prepare necessary handouts, training aids, and equipment for each session.

    Classroom and Drill Support (25%)

    •Supervise and facilitate simulation training sessions, utilizing simulation manikins and resources.

    •Serve as an instructor and provide guidance to other instructors and students during simulation exercises.

    •Train staff and instructors on simulation manikin usage and advanced operations.

    •Implement quality control measures for training delivery standards.

    •Conduct regular assessments of instructors, courses, and program materials.

    •Assist with logistical support during major field exercises.

    •Oversee coordination of on-site maintenance and equipment support for drill manikins.

    Student Mentoring, counseling, and coaching (25%)

    •Collaborate on program activities related to enrollment, workshops, and recruitment.

    •Develop educational interventions and annual educational activities.

    •Coordinate educational logistics for students across UW, Seattle King County, and Seattle Fire.

    •Provide regional support for the Paramedic Training Program, including coordinating and leading talks, lectures, and educational outreach.

    Education Logistics Management (15%)

    •Coordinate and manage logistical aspects of a nationally recognized paramedic training program.

    •Identify and allocate necessary resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials.

    •Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and availability of training equipment, including simulation manikins.

    •Manage simulation manikins and related materials, including setup and orientation of trainees and instructors.

    •Oversee training supplies and materials inventory, procurement, and storage.

    •Optimize resource allocation to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

    •Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure smooth and efficient training operations.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    •Bachelor's degree with major course work in nursing or a closely related field and a minimum of six to eight years' applicable work experience with a minimum of two years' experience as a trainer/educator.

    •Completion of an accredited nursing education program.

    •Valid Washington state nursing license

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    •Emergency Medicine Service training credentials.

    •Paramedic certification (Washington state and/or National Registry) current within the last five years.

    •Knowledgeable about methods of instruction, testing and evaluation of students.

    •Commitment to self-continuing education in Prehospital Medicine and leadership/administration.

    •Curriculum development experience reflecting a diverse student base.

    •Public speaking skills.

    DESIRED:

    •Knowledgeable about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards, and about evidenced-informed clinical practice.

    •Field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care.

    •Academic training and preparation related to emergency medical services at least equivalent to that of a paramedic.

    •Experience with CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) and JRC (Joint Review Committee on Education) accreditation compliance.

    •Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor certification. Experience in teaching the current National Paramedic curriculum.
