    Overview:


    The intern will support the development of fundamental understanding of the thermal, biological or mechanical properties in glass and glass-ceramics.

    The intern will conduct experiments, design test plans and explore new ways to achieve desired material attributes.

    In addition to experimentation, the intern will be responsible for interpretation of experimental data; comparing with literature results; and writing/presenting a final report.


    Examples of potential intern projects:

    • Designing, fabricating, and testing opto-electronic devices based on integrated glass substrates.
    • Modeling, fabrication and characterization of metasurfaces.
    • Exploring new Corning product concepts, performing critical experiments on nano-metal materials to build fundamental understanding of how sintering and deposition conditions affect density, strength, and shrinkage.
    • Bendable glass and development of mechanical capability for polymer materials.
    • Develop computational model and tool for material screen and discovery using machine leaning and molecular simulation with material and chemistry knowledge incorporations.

    Education and Experience:


    • Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline

    Required Skills:

    • Ability to develop a hypothesis and an experimental plan to test
    • Ability to build relationships and interact with team
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information
    • Experience working in a research lab and report writing

    Desired Skills:

    • Knowledge/experience in one of the following: materials science, mechanical testing, optical, physics, chemistry or glassy materials
    • Knowledge/exerience in molecular simulation, metal sintering, composition analysis
    • Measurement and data analysis skills and ability to correlate data to real-life applications.
    • Hands on lab work, mechanical troubleshooting and/or clear room experience
    • Experience with CAD, MATLAB, or Python
    • Enthusiasm for new topics

    Primary Day to Day Responsibilities:

    • Perform background literature searches and execute a research plan
    • Document and present research results and project outputs
    • Learn new techniques and methods as needed to support the project objectives
    • Assist in the design of experiments, communicate observations, perform related measurements, collect, and summarize data
    • Work with scientists to plan and carry out required experiments to advance progress against project objectives
    • Prepare testing specimens, routine operation of standardized testing, assist with non-standard experimentation and methods development, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment
    • A final report is expected.

    ​The range for this position is $1, $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
