- Bakery/Deli clerk will prepare items per customer requests using proper bakery equipment.
- Bakery/Deli Clerk may offer deli meat/cheese product samples if customers inquire about.
- Bakery/Deli Clerk will be able to inform customers of bakery and/or deli specials.
- Provide customers with fresh products that they have ordered and the correct portion size (or as close as possible to the amount ordered) to prevent shrink.
- Recommend deli or bakery items to customers to ensure they get the products they want and need.
- Properly use all kitchen equipment in bakery/deli department such as: computerized scales, fryers, refrigerators, freezers, ovens, proofers, slicers (automated and manual), steamers, and (gas) stove according to company guidelines.
- Prepare foods according to the cooking instructions, and by maintain current food temperature logs.
- Measure, prepare and mix ingredients according to recipe, using variety of kitchen utensils and equipment.
- Adequately prepare, package, label, and inventory ingredients in merchandise.
- Check product quality to ensure freshness by review "sell by" dates and inform department manager.
- Label and stock department merchandise as directed by department manager.
- Report product ordering/shipping discrepancies to the department manager.
- Understand the store's layout and be able to locate products when requested by customer.
- Stay current with present, future, seasonal and special ads.
- Gain and maintain knowledge of products sold within the department and be able to respond to questions and make suggestions about products to customers.
- Ensure proper temperatures in cases and coolers are maintained and temperature logs are maintained. Immediately notify department manager and/or store manager of equipment temperature issues
- Promote trust and respect among associates.
- Help to provide an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important, and appreciated by answering questions regarding products sold within the department and throughout the store.
- Adhere to all food safety regulations and guidelines.
- Reinforce safety programs by complying with safety procedures and identify unsafe conditions and notify store management.
- Display a positive attitude.
- Practice preventive maintenance by properly inspecting equipment and notify appropriate department or store manager of any equipment items in need of repair.
- Notify management of customer or employee accidents.
- Report all safety risk, or issues, and illegal activity, including robbery, theft, or fraud to department and/or store management.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
- Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
- Able to pass drug screen.
- Work and educational history demonstrating stability.
- Basic reading and writing ability; able to read instructions, merchandise labels, order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
- Good interpersonal communications.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior Bakery/Deli Department experience.
- Basic mathematical ability (count, add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of circumstances where only limited explanation and information may be provided.
- Ability to understand a variety of instructions provided in all forms of communication.
- Understand designated cases, case cutter edge, case strips, shelf location, product size/description/quality, customers, shelf tags, labels on products, stocking carts, knives, scale, wrapper, department production equipment, cooler layout, packaging materials, debris on floor, aisle markers, and signs.
- Understand cleaning/maintenance equipment, pallet jacks, forklifts, and baler controls.
- Read forms used in the operation of the Baker/Deli Department.
- Respond to customer questions and responses.
- Respond to intercom/phone.
- Respond to co-workers' questions and comments.
- Respond to the sound of baler/pallet jack/cleaning equipment operation.
- Respond to the sound of box cutter operation.
- Communicate with customers.
- Use the intercom/phone system.
- Communicate with co-workers and managers.
- Read case labels/case strips, signs, tags, shelf signs, numbers and aisle markers, department forms and employment forms.
- Read and follow equipment and chemical warning labels.
- Read and follow operational procedures forms and reports.
- Move while conducting training and orientation of Deli Department personnel, approximately 25 yards
- Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 4 hours in duration.
