    Description

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Provides physical therapy assessment andtreatment of patients in an accurate and timely manner per plan of care createdby a licensed physical therapist. Frequently communicates with a licensedphysical therapist on any positive or negative assessments noted in a patient'streatment, At least onceevery month, the supervision shall be conducted on site or by video or teleconferencewhen in-person supervision is not reasonably practicable. The supervisingphysical therapist shall be available for consultation with the physicaltherapy assistant. The consultation may be provided by telephone, verbally, orin writing.

    Identifies if there are any changes needed inthe patient's plan of care and communicates the changes to a licensed physicaltherapist.

    To provide physicaltherapy treatment in inpatient care for hospitalized patients, skilled nursingresident follow up care and comprehensive outpatient care in a busy clinicsetting. Travels to villages to provide services and expected to provide 50% ofoutpatient services out in our regional village community clinics.Responsible for the assessment planning,implementation and evaluations of services provided and assures that suchservices are provided in accordance with established federal, state and JointCommission regulatory standards.Reportsdirectly to supervising Physical therapist and/or the Medical director.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES

    1.Assesses,treats and modifies treatment plans for both inpatients and outpatients with awide variety of problems, such as but not limited to:

    a.Acuteneurological, orthopedic and medical diagnosis such as; stroke, spinal cordinjury, multiple fractures and total joint replacement.

    b.Ambulatorypatients with problems such as; spinal and extremity pain, arthriticconditions, neuropathies and wound care needs.

    c.Responsiblefor setting and adjusting patient flow to reduce patient waits in order toachieve patient satisfaction.

    d.Orderingequipment required for patient discharge, based on careful observation.

    e.Responsiblefor maintaining good working relationships with co-workers, facilitatesteamwork.

    f.Demonstratessensitivity to cross cultural issues.

    2.PatientEducation:

    a.Advisespatients and family members in methods that facilitate a capacity for self-careand a movement towards a healthcare partnership between providers, the patientsand their families.

    b.Providespatients and their families' home programs to achieve the fullestrehabilitative potential.Home programsare clear and concise and provider ensures that these instructions areunderstood by asking for feedback from the patient.

    c.Providesconsultation, in-services to other healthcare providers in the hospital andoutlying clinics as requested.

    d.Willingto participate in an active student program helping with planning, schedulingand performing in-services as called for by the student program.

    3.Administrativeresponsibilities:

    a.Documentspatient encounters in appropriate format according to hospital policies.

    b.Providesstatistics as requested.

    c.Will beconversant in various billing mechanisms (Medicaid, Medicare and third partypayers) that may be available for patient equipment and service needs, in orderto avoid undue cost to the hospital.

    d.Utilizesthe hospital computer system to obtain patient information, as well as keepabreast of hospital directives, and in general, participate in the efficientand timely flow of information.

    e.Assistsin committee and management duties as requested.

    Job Qualifications:

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    1.Licensed to practice asphysical therapist assistant in the State of Alaska, or licensed per PublicHealth Service standards.

    2.Musthave at least an associate's degree in Physical Therapist Assistant from anaccredited school.

    3.Must beable to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide careappropriate to the age of the patients served.Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development overthe life span.Possess the ability toassess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriateinformation needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his orher age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in theassigned unit's policies and procedures.

    4.Abilityto synthesize knowledge of neurological and musculoskeletal diseases and toformulate results of evaluation into a treatment plan to assist physicians andother professional health staff in proper diagnosis and treatment.

    5.Knowledgeof rehabilitative treatment techniques as utilized by the generalist intreating multiple age groups.

    6.Knowledgeof orthopedic manual therapy techniques.

    7.Knowledgeof Joint Commission standards as they relate to Physical Therapy profession.

    8.Abilityto multi-task and prioritize work in a busy therapy clinic.

    9.Abilityto work independently.
