Job description
Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for a Utility Mechanic to join our Wastewater Collections team.

Classified as a Grade 4 Collection System by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), Brunswick County Public Utilities provides wastewater (sewer) services to roughly 28,000 retail sewer customers and wholesale customers across a large service area.

The Utility Mechanic – Wastewater Collections Works As Part Of a Crew To Perform a Variety Of Both Manual Labor And Specialized Skilled Work To Assist In The Construction, Installation, Repair, And Maintenance Of The County's Wastewater Collection System (including Water And Sewer Lines, Services, Transmission Pump Stations, Grinder Pump Stations And Associated Valves And Other Appurtenances).

Work May Include

Excavation of buried utilities.
Loading/unloading heavy equipment.

Operating a variety of equipment (i.e., pump and vacuum trucks, jet/vac equipment, jetter machines, camera trailer, excavators, backhoes, power tools, hand tools, etc.).

Performing preventive maintenance on array of equipment, pump stations, pumps, valves, ancillary equipment.
Cutting and removing damaged sewer pipes.
Installing/maintaining sewer pipes/valves and associated fittings.
Responding to sanitary sewer backup and overflows.
Setting up bypass pumping (pumps, hoses).
Inspecting and cleaning sanitary sewer mains on a routine basis to prevent system blockages and maintain compliance.
Assisting with setup/tear-down of traffic control work zones and various safety equipment including trench boxes, hydraulic shoring, and confined space equipment
Back-filling excavations.
Performing worksite cleanup (i.e., materials hauling/disposal, site restoration activities, etc.).
Maintaining and repairing equipment as required.


The Utility Mechanic – Wastewater Collections reports to a Crew Supervisor and is responsible for taking appropriate safety measures and following established safety policies and procedures while performing all work.

This position will be placed on an on-call rotation schedule, which requires a response to emergency calls both after hours and during inclement weather conditions.

Career Ladder


Brunswick County Public Utilities utilizes a career ladder program for advancement which allows employees to further their career in the wastewater services field through promotion as advanced grades of NC Wastewater Operator Certification are attained.

Promotions include a 5% increase in pay when all criteria are met.

Individuals who do not possess a NC Wastewater Operator Certification will be hired at a Mechanic I level.
Training and testing fees for wastewater operator certification are paid for by Brunswick County.
Placement as a Mechanic II, III, or IV based on NC Wastewater Operator Certification level and experience.

Employees with appropriate certification will be required to serve as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) or Back-up ORC as necessary.

In addition to the Career Ladder, Brunswick County provides other opportunities to assist employees in their career development, including extensive safety training and in-house CDL training (preparing staff for licensing through NC DMV).

High school diploma (or GED) and experience in wastewater collections; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Experience related to the following fields is highly desirable:

Construction (grading, storm drains, site work, builder, plumber, utility construction, road construction)
Landscaping (installer, maintenance, irrigation)
Mechanic (heavy equipment, HVAC, mechanical and hydraulic systems)
Manufacturing Facility Maintenance
Tech School Student (mechanical, pipe-fitting, welding, machining or similar course study)

Valid NC or SC Driver License required. Must possess Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A or attain within probationary period.

Physical Requirements


Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including motor vehicles, pumps, tractors, lawn mowers, generators, water pumps, etc., and mechanic hand tools.

Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, reach, lift, and bend. Must be able to work in confined areas.
