    Job Description

    We seek a Mechanical Engineer for a collaborative, technical role in transitioning high-performing 3D printers from prototype to customer product.

    This team focuses on mechanical system design and analysis, 3D printing, prototyping, building, and solving complex problems involving advanced concepts, materials, optics, and systems.

    Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to strategize and plan the transition from prototype to shippable product.
    • Improve printer component designs, emphasizing modularity, ease of assembly and alignment, thermal design, and laser safety.
    • Design, prototype, test, and refine mechanical systems for continuous improvement of printers.
    • Work with a small team to build the first group of printers and facilitate transfer to a contract manufacturer.
    • Develop and document assembly processes.
    • Perform printer mechanical and thermal testing to specification.
    • Design fixturing for printer alignment and calibration, prioritizing ease of use in the field.
    • Conduct thermal analysis and design for printer use in challenging environments.
    • Establish methods for ensuring consistent printer performance across multiple printers.
    • Design printer interfaces with customer infrastructure, such as resin container handling and loading.
    • Contribute to customer support by creating assembly instructions, use instructions, and mechanical tool kits.
    • Travel to customer sites for printer assembly, servicing, and training, adhering to EH&S requirements and promoting a safe work environment.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • 5+ years designing electromechanical products, such as industrial automation equipment or robots.
    • BS degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
    • Experience working with industrial optical and electrical components, such as lens and mirror systems, sensors, motor controllers, motion stages, PLCs, actuators, and embedded automated components.
    • Proficient user of SolidWorks.
    • Highly hands-on builder and problem solver.
    • Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills; highly collaborative team player able to work independently.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • 10+ years experience in design for manufacture, build, and test of industrial automation systems.
    • MS in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
    • Experience working closely with an optical engineer to design optomechanical assemblies.
    • Experience driving a complex optomechanical product from prototype to product via a phased development cycle.
    • Experience working within quality management systems (document control, configuration management).
    • Experience working with lasers in a laser-safe environment.
    • Experience with systems involving material handling and fluidics.
    • Experience coding for instrument control and data analysis using Matlab, Python, C++, or equivalent.
    • Experience with thermal simulations and implementing mitigation strategies.
    • Experience working at customer sites.
    • Prototyping skills, such as 3D printing, shop tools, and CNC CAM.
    • Experience with SolidWorks thermal simulation, fluid simulation, and/or PDM document control.
    • Electronics background, including laboratory electronic test equipment and analog and digital circuit fundamentals.
