    Description

    Summary

    The Infusion Nurse plays a crucial role in administering intravenous medications and therapies to patients in various healthcare settings. This position requires a high level of skill and expertise in IV therapy techniques, as well as a deep understanding of medication administration and patient care protocols. The IV Infusion Nurse works closely with physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safe and effective delivery of intravenous treatments.

    Essential Functions

    The Infusion Nurse is expected to perform the following essential functions:
    • Administer intravenous medications, fluids, and therapies according to physician orders and established protocols.
    • Assess patients' vascular access and select appropriate sites for IV placement, considering factors such as patient comfort and treatment requirements.
    • Monitor patients' vital signs and overall condition during IV therapy, identifying and responding promptly to any signs of adverse reactions or complications.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of IV medications administered, including dosage, infusion rate, and patient response.
    • Educate patients and their families on IV therapy procedures, potential side effects, and self-care techniques.
    • Collaborate with healthcare team members to develop individualized care plans for patients receiving IV treatments, ensuring continuity of care and optimal treatment outcomes.
    • Follow established infection control procedures and safety guidelines to prevent healthcare-associated infections and ensure a safe working environment for patients and staff.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing professional development activities to enhance clinical skills and knowledge in IV therapy.
    • Establish and maintain accurate and proficient use of electronic medical record system.
    • Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
    • Prepare patients for Coronary CT Angiogram in conjunction with the Imaging Department and according to the Cardiologist's protocol.
    • Provide IV and phlebotomy assistance to other hospital departments, utilizing ultrasound guidance if needed.
    • Follow standards set forth in the Infusion Nurses' Society Protocols.
    • Other tasks and duties as assigned.
    Required Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies
    • Vascular access device selection, insertion, care, and management.
    • Ultrasound guidance for peripheral and central venous access.
    • Nursing competencies and infusion protocols of Boone Memorial Hospital, Inc.

    Physical demands
    • Ability to perform various motor skills such as; standing for long periods of time, walking, lifting (up to 50 pounds) using proper lifting techniques, stair climbing, reaching, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, grasping and arm-hand coordination on a continuous basis.

    Required education and experience
    • Must be a graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing and have met the requirements for licensure of the WV Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses.
    • Must hold a valid licensure as a Registered Nursing in West Virginia.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a registered nurse.
    • Must be proficient in PICC and midline catheter placement or be willing to train and become certified to perform these procedures.
    • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology related IV therapy.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
    • Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and professional integrity.
    • Must demonstrate competent computer skills.
    Preferred education and experience
    • 5+ years of experience as a registered nurse.
    • Specific experience in IV therapy.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in PICC and midline catheter placement.
