    NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

    If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

    What Your Job Will Be Like
    We are seeking a research Manager to lead an existing department in Decision Support Systems (DSS, Data Analysis & Exploitation This department will work closely with the Real Time Data Processing department to lead our algorithm research and development efforts to produce actionable intelligence from large amounts of real time streaming, remote sensing data.
    DSS develops innovative, unique-in-class tasking, collection, processing, exploitation, and dissemination systems for national security missions.

    Your team will be responsible for developing and implementing algorithms and software for real-time image processing, extraction and classification of static and dynamic events from high throughput, high volume data streams.

    Your team conducts the R&D required to enhance national assets and to develop new or improved mission capabilities.

    This manager will also be responsible for partnering with 15 other departments contributing to research and development activities in this area.

    You will also take a lead role in partnering with other Lab organizations on applicable research in data fusion, machine learning, artificial intelligence and data analytics.


    We have significant experience in designing and implementing cloud-computing architectures, advanced networking and computing technologies, visualization and distributed, real-time software.

    We process terabytes of near real-time data daily, extracting information and providing it to national decision makers.

    The department will provide core technical competencies for DSS and help enable program execution across Center 6300 Space Mission Program offices, with significant partnership with the Advanced Systems Program Office (ASPO) in 6330 and the Mission Engineering & Geospatial Data Analytics Program Office (MEGASPO) in 6340.


    You will also work to establish strategic partnerships with departments in other mission areas to deliver robust software and data analytics solutions for space-based sensing platforms.

    To that end, you will develop and execute a strategic plan to maintain appropriate staff resources and skills.
    On any given day, you may be called on to:
    Address current program needs and help to develop a future vision and plan for the capabilities of the organization in close collaboration with laboratory partners
    Own and guide the department vision in researching and developing cutting edge data analytic algorithms
    Establish and maintain key laboratory and customer partnerships to research, develop, and engineer effective algorithmic and software solutions
    Lead career development of staff, to include work assignments and assessment of performance, and perform hiring, retention, rewards and recognition for the department
    Ensure that customer needs are satisfied by managing and coordinating specific work, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements as needed
    Engage in research and technology communities for identifying future opportunities, increasing visibility of the department's core capabilities, and identifying, recruiting and developing the next generation of leaders in the discipline
    Ensure consistent alignment to laboratory standards and guidelines related to safety, security and quality

    The position requires occasional travel
    Qualifications We Require

    Master's, or PhD in a related discipline plus five or more years of experience.

    You can obtain and maintain a required US DOE issued Q clearance and SCI clearance, which may require passing a polygraph test.

    Qualifications We Desire

    Two years of demonstrated leadership experience in a research and development setting: for example, mentored and led an organization/team on goals and objectives; effectively led people, and guided multidisciplinary teams
    Ability to handle ambiguity and develop strategic direction in a dynamic environment
    Familiarity with image processing, data analytics, data fusion, Multi-INT, AI/ML
    Familiarity with modern software development practices/tools. Relevant experience in scientific/engineering software development, testing, and delivery
    Experience providing integrated engineering solutions in support of high consequence national security missions, to include the inception, elaboration, construction, and deployment of advanced information systems
    Experience in successfully interacting with and influencing a variety of stakeholders, customers, industry partners, management and staff
    Consistent track record of writing technical proposals, presenting these proposals to potential customers, and getting work funded
    Experience or knowledge of Space programs and mission areas
    Demonstrated ability to work across Sandia's program and organizational structures
    A history of establishing and maintaining trusted partnerships
    Demonstrated interest and success in recruiting, hiring, and developing/mentoring new personnel
    Knowledge of Sandia's technical base, organization and policies
    Established network and partnerships within Sandia including the research organizations
    Previous management experience
    Excellent oral and written communication skills
    Active DOE Q clearance with SCI clearance

    We design, develop, and deploy large networked computing systems that push the state-of-the-art in data processing throughput and real-time action and response.

    Our research, development, and engineering efforts are focused in areas such as advanced computing architectures, coordinated tasking and control, multi-mission scheduling optimization, supervised and unsupervised classification techniques, multi-spectral phenomenology and characterization, decision and information theory, and activity-based intelligence.

    Security Clearance

    Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
