Location:METROHEALTH MEDICAL CENTER
MetroHealth Medical Center, Northeast Ohio's most experienced Level I Adult Trauma Center, offers a 12-month post-graduate fellowship program for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in trauma, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery (EGS). This role has a dual responsibility as a student and as a clinical APP in MetroHealth's Division of Trauma, Critical Care, Burns, and Emergency General Surgery. The APP fellow will fulfill educational responsibilities in cadence with the growth of clinical skills and incrementally increased clinical responsibility. The curriculum will include didactic and clinical experience under the guidance of experienced, nationally recognized physicians and APPs. Fellows will learn to perform a thorough trauma assessment and implement high-quality, well-rounded critical care at an American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified Level I Adult Trauma Center, Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, and will rotate at MetroHealth's American Burn Association and ACS Committee on Trauma—verified Adult and Pediatric Burn Center.
Education will be 40% Trauma-focused, 20% EGS, and 30% Surgical Critical Care, including Burn ICU. The final 10% will consist of elective rotation options. Elective options include surgical ICU, community trauma/critical care, life flight, neurocritical care, and others. The core curriculum will include recognition of traumatic injury, initial management of the traumatically injured patient, recognition of complications, and identification of surgical emergencies. The fellow will learn surgical management and recognition of options for non-surgical management of Trauma, EGS, and critically ill patients. The fellow will have an opportunity to participate in weekly educational lectures, morbidity and mortality reviews, ongoing quality improvement and research projects, and monthly APP-specific education.
Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification will be provided. Clinical procedure training will include but is not limited to airway skills such as intubation and surgical airways; acute hemorrhage management including tourniquet use and deep laceration repair; surgical treatment of musculoskeletal trauma such as fasciotomy technique and management, and removal of foreign bodies; assessment and management of blunt and penetrating torso trauma such as FAST exam, and chest tube placement; intraoperative surgical skills including sterile technique, patient positioning, retraction and surgical knot tying for both Trauma and EGS; critical care skills will include central and arterial line placements, bronchoscopy, and ventilator management.
APP Fellow Educational Responsibilities:
Participate in required didactic lectures and case presentations, demonstrate proficiency in assigned educational text, and attend all skills sessions and simulation labs. Demonstrate substantial achievement in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and systems-based practice.
APP Fellow Clinical Responsibilities:
Delivers direct Trauma/Critical Care and EGS patient care consistent with the APP education, experience, and certification under the supervision/collaboration of the Trauma/Critical Care and EGS physician. This includes diagnosing, managing, and/or referring Trauma/Critical Care and EGS health care issues.
Education/Certification Requirements:
· Graduate of an ARC-PA-approved Physician Assistant Program, or an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program
· Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies, in Nursing, or grandfathered equivalent
· Current certification of a PA through the NCCPA (or successor) or national certification as APRN by a nationally accredited organization
· Applicable state licensure through Ohio State Medical Board for a certificate to practice
· Prescriptive Authority through the Ohio State Medical Board
· ACLS and BLS certifications are also required
Other Required Skills:
· Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills as determined by the interview committee
· Proven ability to interact effectively with all members of the Service Line/Department/Hospital and other MH employees at all levels
· Ability to prioritize work assignments and maintain flexibility in a fast-paced environment.
