    The Schmeichel Lab Behavioral Neuroscience Research Technician is responsible for conducting addiction research experiments using behavioral neuroscience techniques in rats and providing general lab and administrative support.

    Once adequately trained, the successful candidate must be capable of handling and conducting experiments using rats and competent at gathering and recording the resultant research data, as well as training, scheduling, and supervising undergraduate student researchers.

    The position is contingent upon grant funding.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


    The following outlines the essential functions of the position and should not be considered a complete nor detailed description of all duties inherent in the position.


    • Prepares and performs laboratory experiments under the direction of Dr. Schmeichel in order to produce reliable and precise data while adhering to standard laboratory safety practices.
    • Runs behavioral testing equipment and participates in other study aspects, such as
    * immunohistochemistry.

    • Ensures care of study animals, including general husbandry and postsurgical maintenance.
    • Performs small animal surgery and tissue collection techniques.
    • Maintains and updates laboratory notebooks and databases; collects/organizes data for analyses and presentation.
    • Will be required to work with controlled substances and handle security documents.
    • Maintains laboratory equipment.
    • Assists in the training of students and ensures that research is conducted with care and precision.
    • Attends laboratory meetings.
    • Manages lab personnel and equipment in the lab, ensuring lab standards and safety regulations are followed.
    • Responsible for ordering supplies, requesting quotes, tracking shipments, and maintaining inventory.
    Required Qualifications


    • BA or BS in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biology or related discipline.
    • Minimum 1-year experience working with rats or mice.
    • Willingness to conduct behavioral research with rodents.
    • Experience with automated behavioral.
    • Facility with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
    • Strong organization, communication (oral and written), project management, and interpersonal skills.
    • Self-motivated, willing to work on a team, and with excellent attention to detail.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • MA/MS.
    • Experience in injections and surgical techniques.
    • Testing equipment and other neuroscience techniques (e.g., histology).
    • Some faculty with statistics, statistical software, and plotting software (preferably Prism/GraphPad).
    • Some faculty with EEG sleep scoring software (preferably Neuroscore, Ponemah).
