    Job Summary

    Assists pharmacist in preparation of prescriptions for dispensing and maintenance of drug inventory, coordinates third party billing for prescriptions, and collects patient payments.

    Responsibilities and Duties

    1. Prepares prescriptions.
      1. Receives new prescription and refill requests, verifies information, and enters into the pharmacy software system.
      2. Selects the appropriate drug, brand, form, strength, and directions.
      3. Counts the number of pills, capsules, or tablets and packages the required number into the appropriate container.
      4. Affixes label with instructions on use and the expiration date.
      5. Assesses for drug interactions.
    2. Processes prescription insurance claims.
      1. Determines patients' insurance carrier, verifies coverage and submits the claim through the pharmacy software system to verify coverage.
      2. Updates insurance information in pharmacy system.
      3. Collaborates with pharmacist and prescriber if an alternative medication is needed.
      4. Collects the amount of payment due from the patient.
    3. Provides guidance to patients.
      1. Answers pharmacy phone and provides assistance.
      2. Answers questions about prescriptions.
      3. Educates patients and caregivers on appropriate use of medication, including frequency and method of administration.
      4. Refers patients and caregivers to pharmacist for more in-depth questions related to prescriptions or medication counseling.
    4. Supports pharmacist with inventory management and maintaining the pharmacy.
      1. Assesses the availability of medications in the pharmacy and orders medications needing replenishment.
      2. Assists with medication returns.
      3. Removes medications past the expiration date.
      4. Ensures medications are stored correctly.
      5. Cleans pharmacy area and equipment.
    Qualifications and Skills

    Completion of a Pharmacy Technician program. Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician in good standing with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy. Current certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), National Healthcare Association (NHA), or equivalent certification agency.
