    Description

    Under general supervision, installs, configures, services, maintains, repairs, and enhances local area network (LAN) computer hardware/software and desktop computer equipment, computer systems, and packaged software; performs moderate to complex troubleshooting of LAN and desktop computers and peripheral hardware problems; may assist the Network/Security team in installation, administration, service, repair of Wide Area Network (WAN) hardware/software.

    This is an entry level classification within the hardware/software support team.


    • Maintains Local Area Networking (LAN) hardware/software components to ensure maximum network performance; reviews networks alerts and statistics; provides preventative and corrective action; develops procedures, configuration, and documentation for networking hardware/software.
    • Installs, tests, configures, troubleshoots, and repairs LAN and desktop computer equipment and peripheral equipment including network servers, server components, switches, hubs, cabling, network protocols, printers, scanners, controllers, and other peripherals.
    • Installs, tests, and upgrades software.
    • Identifies equipment and software for solutions to user automation requirements based on operational plans and implementation schedules; provides detailed information for timely ordering; monitors project plans to insure delivery schedules are being met; recommends corrective action, if appropriate; determines and writes user specifications for hardware/software.
    • Responds to user requests for assistance with hardware/software problems; identifies problem and implements efficient and effective solutions or refers to appropriate staff; provides operating system information and LAN support to users; performs moderate to complex troubleshooting on hardware/software and network problems.
    • Trains user personnel and provides instruction when needed; develops user manuals; provides technical direction to call center staff and PC Technicians.
    • Maintains proficiency in Polk County hardware, software, office automation, and networking capabilities; insures that the latest technology is continually reviewed for use.
    • Performs related duties as required.
    • Knowledge of Polk County hardware, peripheral devices, supportive operating systems, and programming in support of Polk County hardware and software.
    • Knowledge of the capabilities of computer systems and associated networking equipment, databases concepts, telecommunication concepts, and project management.
    • Ability to install hardware and software.
    • Ability to troubleshoot and repair computer equipment and peripheral equipment including network servers and server components, switches, cabling, and modems.
    • Ability to use appropriate network-analyzing tools.
    • Ability to analyze system and software problems and develop efficient and effective solutions.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other County employees using courtesy, patience, and tact.
    • Ability to train users, develop user instruction manuals and document system design.
    • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
    • Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field, and
    • Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field , and
    • Two years experience in computer related field, or
    • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Special Requirements:

    • A criminal background check is required.
    • A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment.
    • A valid State of Iowa driver's license is required.
