    Botetourt County is currently accepting applications to fill the position of Maintenance Technician

    Job Summary:

    Performs responsible work both skilled and unskilled work in routine and preventative maintenance, repair, and improvement of County buildings and facilities.

    Performs and assists with skilled electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and painting work.


    Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

    • Do the right thing.
    • Promote the vision, mission and values of the Board of Supervisors and County Government Organization.
    • Performs maintenance and repairs involving plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, electrical, motors, and other trades.
    • Installs and repairs electrical door locks, switches, magnetic starters, relays and electrical motors.
    • Performs interior and exterior painting.
    • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment such as heating and air conditioning units; maintains and repairs heating and air conditioning controls.
    • Ability to determine the size of pumps, valves, and motors.
    • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work assignments; keep records of work performed and reports.
    • Ability to interpret charts, blueprints and maps.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with other County staff and the general public.
    • Provides support in the custodial area with cleaning buildings and trash removal, as needed.
    • Provides support in the ground's maintenance area with mowing, weed eating, general field prep, sports field prep and marking and other duties as needed.
    • Performs snow removal duties as necessary.
    • Ability to safely use equipment and materials provided by the County while performing job duties
    • Position holder is subject to 24-hour call for after hours emergencies, including holidays, nights and weekends.
    • Position holder is subject to pre-employment physical to include alcohol/drug screening and will be subject to random screenings.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned

    Job Requirements:

    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
    • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience and/or training in electrical, mechanical or structural maintenance and repair work; or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Knowledge of methods, practices, standards, terminology and tools used in building trades, cleaning, maintaining, repairing, and improving County buildings and grounds including electrical and HVAC and other building trades.
    • Knowledge of standard practices, tools, and terminology of the electrical, HVAC and building trades.
    • Ability to follow industry specific guidelines as they relate to safety and environmental practices.
    • Knowledge of state and local standards and codes relating to building regulations.
    • Ability to follow and maintain maintenance schedules and respond to emergencies.
    • Must possess valid Virginia driver's license and have and maintain a good driving record

    Physical Demands/Special Work Environment:

    • Constantly providing repairs, inspections and maintenance to buildings, machinery and other items. These tasks involve movement such as picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand as in handling.
    • Substantial movements/motions of the arms, wrists, hands and or fingers.
    • The person in this position frequently moves equipment, tools, maintenance items, trash and yard waste weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Frequently operates, positions and inspects machinery and tools for use in maintenance tasks.
    • The person in this position frequently is required to traverse across uneven grounds; sports fields; indoor arenas; small spaces such as bathroom stalls and concession stands; and wet, snow- or ice-covered walkways.
    • The person in this position frequently communicates and exchanges information with colleagues and subordinates who need detailed instructions on work assignments. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
    • Occasionally ascends/descends ladder to provide maintenance.
    • Constantly bends, squats, leans and positions oneself low to the ground or on the ground to repair, maintain and inspect objects.
    • Constantly turns, twists, pulls and pushes with arms, hands and legs to loosen, tighten, screw and otherwise manipulate tools, parts, fasteners, wires and other components.
    • Requires accurate use and precise perception and judgement for: safe use of measuring devices; operation of machinery and equipment; operation of motor vehicles; and the general observation of surroundings and activities for the safety of individuals, staff and the general public.
    • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.
    • Constantly works in outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards and atmospheric conditions
