- Evaluate and make recommendations as appropriate.
- Respond to emergencies on weekends, holidays, and off-duty hours; may be on standby call.
- Assist the training unit with processing and filing of all documents, correspondence such as reports, contracts, resolutions, ordinances, letters, memos, training bulletins, public notifications, purchase orders, statements, directives, and announcements.
- Operate a computer for record keeping and document processing to input and retrieve data in support of departmental operations.
- Maintain records, files; compiles reports, and logging of all training files. Maintain training documents for State standards and CALEA.
- Investigate animal cruelty and neglect charges. Perform related duties to promote compliance with laws regulating animal treatment.
- Patrol the City for stray animals and communicate with owners about losing animals; issue warnings or write tickets for violations. Conduct special investigations in response to public complaints of violations of animal regulatory ordinances.
- Respond to calls from the public, law enforcement agencies, or other Animal Control Officers concerning injured, stray, sick, or dangerous animals and violations of animal regulatory ordinances.
- Enforce State and local laws, regulations, and ordinances, such as leash laws, licensing, vaccinations, spaying, neutering, quarantining, dangerous dog, animal noise, and barking dog ordinances.
- Pick up and transport animals to the shelter for impounding, disposal, or rabies investigation, or to the veterinarian as appropriate.
- Prepare reports, completes records and various forms such as daily activity sheets, receipts for fees received, citations, quarantine and investigative reports.
- Provide information to the public regarding licensing, vaccinations, euthanasia, rabies control, pet-owner responsibilities, spaying, neutering, and adoptions.
- Ensure that daily truck logs, complaints, computer logs, equipment inspections, citations and records are maintained.
- Appear in court to testify and present evidence regarding violations of animal regulatory ordinances.
- Perform animal care duties such as feeding animals, monitoring sick and dangerous animals, segregating and isolating animals when necessary.
- Detect disease or injury in animals and performs minor medical treatments on animals as necessary; assists the veterinarian with vaccinations and inspections of animals.
- Clean and disinfects kennel areas, vehicles and equipment.
- Use department issued weapons, such as a shotgun, tranquilizer gun, and pellet gun to capture and/or destroy animals in the field; participates in destroying animals (euthanasia).
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Ability to read, understand and explain applicable State and local laws, regulations, and ordinances; obtain cooperation and compliance from members of the public.
- Ability to analyze a situation and adopt a course of action; exercise tact and independent judgment in dealing with the public.
- Ability to speak to a wide range of people; prepare clear and concise reports; present a positive public image; develop and maintain working relationships with co-workers, agencies, and organizations; handle sick, injured, dangerous, or dead animals and decomposing animal carcasses in a safe and humane manner.
- Learn the physical and behavioral characteristics of animals; learn breed identification; learn and recognize symptoms of rabies and other common animal diseases.
- Some knowledge of machines, equipment, materials, and operating procedures involved in apprehending, impounding, and disposing of stray or vicious animals.

Animal Control Officer - Starkville - CITY OF STARKVILLE
Description

This is supervisory and administrative field work that involves catching, confining and disposing of stray or diseased dogs or other animals in accordance with Animal Control Ordinances and State laws.
This is a regular full time position overseen by the Police Department.*Essential Job Functions: •Supervise and review the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy.
Experience:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S.
Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency; and experience in field supervision related to animal control and care work.
*Interpersonal Contacts: Has regular contact with internal and external sources, including employees, Department Heads, outside agencies, the media, and other governmental agencies.*Working Environment: Work is performed both inside in an office environment and outside. Work exposes the employee to hazards associated with vicious animals, the carbon monoxide chamber, blood from animal, and lethal fumes. Work also exposes the employee to irate citizens, noisy animals, and dangers associated with apprehending potentially dangerous animals. Protective equipment is required such as leather gloves, a protective body suit, protective eye wear, and animal restraining devices.
*Physical Demands: Work requires the physical ability to sit in confined seating for extended periods; perform heavy lifting of large animals, boxes and dead animals; and the ability to climb ladders to check the crematorium or traps. Work also involves crawling, jumping, running after animals to apprehend them; forcibly restraining and controlling animals; and standing for extended periods of time.
*Necessary Special Requirements: A valid driver's license is required.
