    Description

    The University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake Audiology Clinic will be offering a full time AuD externship beginning around June 2025 and ending around June 2026. The experience includes work with adults only in the following areas: hearing aids, cochlear implants, BAHDs, diagnostic evaluations, and vestibular assessment. In addition, the extern may have opportunities to work closely with other clinic providers and staff (physicians, nurses, physician assistants, medical assistants, audiology assistant), observe otologic surgery, and take part in hearing aid and CI manufacturer training. In concert with the audiology assistant, the extern will be expected to help with a weekly walk-in device clinic and hearing aid check-ins, as well as help with calibrating equipment and prepping sound booths at the start of the day. Work in some of our other UW Medicine locations may be an option for applicants with available transportation. Applicants should have a desire to work in a university medical center environment with multiple preceptors, as well as interact with other healthcare professionals and a wide array of adult patients. Strong candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills, communicate effectively through speaking and writing, incorporate feedback from preceptors, and show independence in taking responsibility for their learning.

    Applicant must have successfully completed 1st-3rd year AuD coursework by the start of this externship. The extern will be expected to show progress over the course of the externship and receive at least passing grades on evaluations as determined by the extern's graduate program and clinical preceptors.

    -Critical thinking with audiometry, changing protocol based on individual patient factors

    -Hearing aids/BAHA: evaluating need for amplification, selecting appropriate devices, fitting using real ear verification, programming, troubleshooting, answering patient questions appropriately, anticipating potential needs of patient
    -Cochlear implants: evaluating candidacy for cochlear implantation, mapping, troubleshooting, counseling on realistic expectations, changing speaking/communication style to ensure patient understanding
    -Vestibular: Running and interpreting results of VEMP, rotational chair, VNG, posturography
    -Independence or near independence in skills listed above
    -Continued curiosity and desire for self-improvement in the field of Audiology
    -Independence in taking responsibility for one's learning
    -Counseling specialized to each patient

As Needed Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship: We have traditionally split up the rotation into quarters and completed an evaluation at the end of each quarter, at which time we may check in with the university. We will also communicate with the university if any concerns arise.
