About the Department:

The English department at GMU offers various programs, including a BA in English with multiple concentrations, a BFA in Creative Writing, several MA programs, and three terminal degrees, including a PhD in Writing and Rhetoric.

About the Position:

The individual in this term faculty role would join the faculty in the Writing and Rhetoric concentration and Professional and Technical Writing Minor, which are separate from the Composition Program and focus mainly on professional and technical writing at the BA and MA levels. This individual would also teach Mason Core (general education) classes on Ethical AI.

Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include teaching ENGH 210: Equitable AI as well as our core undergraduate course in professional and technical writing (English 388). Opportunities may arise to teach additional technical communication courses at the undergraduate level. Times of appointment will be based on budget and performance. The appointee may be required to teach courses in person and/or in distance format depending on departmental requirements.

Teaching responsibilities entail:

Teaching specified courses as per faculty expectations outlined in the workload policy and George Mason faculty handbook;
Average instructional workload is 4 courses per term, with the possibility of teaching during the summer;
Teaching through various formats including in-person, online, and hybrid classes;
Teaching modern tools and methods related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and relevant coding and structure to humanities students to explore ethical and equitable applications of AI; and
Teaching strategies in professional and technical communication consistent with contemporary dialogues in academia and practice.

Departmental Service responsibilities include:

Engaging in professional associations pertinent to technical communication, writing instruction, information technology, or associated fields; and
Guiding students on academic and professional matters while directing them to appropriate resources when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in technical communication or related discipline;
Proven record of effective teaching as the lead instructor in technical communication courses delivered in various formats (online, hybrid, and/or in person); and
Ability to collaborate with a diverse student body.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in technical communication or allied area;
Past teaching and/or research involvement with Artificial Intelligence (AI), encompassing AI coding and ethics, within a communication or humanities context;
Previous teaching experience in a collegiate or university environment;
Former professional practice as a technical communicator or similar position (editing, UX, design, etc.);
Previous experience advising students on academic, professional, and technical writing matters in diverse settings; and
Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
