Job Summary
The Electronics Engineer is a critical member of the research team in the Chemistry Molecular Structure Center (MSC) with wide-ranging duties, including routine maintenance on electronic diffractometer components, data acquisition computers, general IT hardware and software, and diffractometers, as well as more advanced tasks like project-centered programming and information management in a complex research environment.
Improves the overall performance of the laboratory by implementing IT changes or updates where appropriate and useful.
Ensures the reliability and security of our data servers and other data storage systems, which are of utmost importance to the laboratory and external funding agencies.
Oversees other specialized workstations and servers and provides a dependable computing environment supporting the research mission of the department and university.
Contributes to the teaching mission of the department and university by assisting students and faculty with the installation and use of crystallographic databases.
Rapidly diagnoses and solves all electronic system and IT problems in a complex scientific environment with a 24-hour access user laboratory.
In an ever-changing lab environment and with fast-developing solutions.Is up to date on electronic and IT developments in the field and apply that knowledge to ensure lab efficiency.
Promptly responds to risks associated with the systemsSeeks solutions for problems identified with hardware, firmware, software, and automation; design new systems, propose device and system upgrades, and maintains existing devices and systems.
Designs, constructs, and implements microcontroller devices, and complex electronic circuits that aid operational workflows and allow for changing and growth of the data, acquisition, and control needs of the MSC with a target of a 6-10 year service life between major hardware changes.
Evaluates and adapts tools to mitigate bottlenecks and potential outages; develops and maintains technical documentation relating to electronic devices, including instrument repairs for all devices (diffractometer and auxiliary equipment) in the facility workflow.
Develops, deploys, and maintains firmware for custom microcontroller-based devices and user self-service applications, or acts as project-lead if the application is team-developed; craft automation scripts to reduce user intervention for mundane tasks.
Creates and maintains tools that allow for expanded user self-service.Maintains Reciprocal Net, the custom facility crystallographic collaboration and cataloging software and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and the other databases.
Assists users in troubleshooting issues with Crystallographic software; deploy and maintain collaboration utilities for staff.Implements and maintains virtualized and/or containerized environments for crystallographic software and other facility requirements.
General Responsibilities
Designs and constructs electronics and/or electronic systems in support of research experiments (such as intricate analog and digital circuitries).
Provides estimates for labor and material costs associated with system design and construction; oversees the construction and installation of systems; participates in proposals for future construction projects; develops project objectives, budgets, work plans and implementation strategies.
Consults with faculty, staff, and students on problems associated with design and construction of research instrumentation as well as research systems programming.
Repairs, tests and adjusts instrumentation to ensure optimal working order, including performing high-level repairs with extended reversed engineering; communicates with users, such as instructing on the safe handling of the device in question and explaining the problems and solutions.
Collaborates with co-workers, management, faculty, staff, and students to execute highly coordinated instrumentation development to support research objectives.Maintains and prepares documentation for electronics and/or electronic systems and improves the performance of existing research systems.
Develops technical documentation for electronics as needed and may assist faculty and/or students with research publications.

Bachelor's degree (preferably in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or related field)

WORK EXPERIENCE

2 years electronics design or related experience

4 years of experience in electronics, circuit design, or IT
Prior experience with any of these or related equipment is desirable

The Electronics Engineer will support a variety of equipment in the MSC for example: Panalytical Empyrean Multipurpose Diffractometer and a Bruker D8 single crystal diffractometer
Demonstrated working experience in installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining various operating systems including Windows, and Linux/UNIX-like installations, as well as custom environments
Experience in creating custom scripts for system automation
Development of complex websites, ideally including HTML, CSS, PHP, Java Servlets, Java Server Pages, and XML and XML-related technologies
Experience with relational database technologies, SQL, PostgreSQL, and JDBC
Knowledge in the administration and performance tuning of application stacks (specifically Tomcat and Apache for custom Reciprocal Net database).
Solid experience with virtualization and automation software, e.g., Puppet and custom automation scripts
Ability to respond to issues on short notice outside of regular business hours is necessary
Familiarity and interest in a science field are helpful
Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment required
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to respond quickly to instrument, electronic device, or IT system failure. Must be able to work with a variety of users in a laboratory environment with deadlines. On occasion, lifting up to 50 pounds is necessary. Typically sitting for most of the day and working at a computer workstation.
This role also requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long duration's.
It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls.The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases.
The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.Advertised Salary
