    Job Summary

    The Tax Managing Director, Tax Automation & Innovation, as a member of the Tax Automation & Innovation team, applies industry knowledge and experience in order to collaborate with clients of the firm and team members to implement tax automation tools

    The Tax Managing Director, Tax Automation & Innovation is responsible for marketing, networking, and business development. The role is also responsible for assessing client tax departments end-to-end and determining the best areas in need of automation across tax data, process, technology and workforce. Client engagements may include optimization or implementation of existing client tools, custom BDO tax/data solutions or 3rd party vendor solutions. The Tax Managing Director, Tax Automation & Innovation is charged with running engagements from the proposal and scoping phase to overseeing design, build, test and deployment as well as developing training and documentation during the final client hand-off stage. Duties often include ongoing maintenance and consulting as well as providing support to clients post-implementation, such as on-site or virtual "go-live" or close assistance within new systems. It is expected that there will be some form of attendance, participation in or speaking role at multiple various conferences and events throughout the U.S. Other responsibilities may include collaborating with multiple other offices within the firm to assist other business line engagement teams in delivering tax solutions to their clients as well as supporting the firm through development of new internal tax solutions or consulting and training on existing internal tax processes, technologies and applications.

    Job Duties Tax Consulting
    • Qualifies viability of prospective clients or projects and identifies opportunities to expand current business and effectively up-sells to clients
    • Leverages deep business domain expertise and understanding of inner workings of business functions to design customized technology and business solutions
    • Grasps the entire value chain associated external client or internal teams' business and develops unique strategies aligned with business objectives
    • Leads internal and external executive level meetings including proposal delivery and external and internal solutions workshops
    • Understands work plans for tax consulting projects performed for one's clients
    • Assists in managing client expectations
    • Gathers requirements, estimate fees and prepare high level scoping and proposed solutions for internal projects and client proposals
    • Drafts and finalizes clear and compelling proposals, RFP responses and business cases.
    • Leads the establishment of internal standards and processes for the practice
    • Communicates complex technical items to target audience so that relevant issues are clearly understood
    • Able to architect comprehensive solutions that address all facets of developing new business capabilities a) Strategy, b) Organization/People, c) Processes/Controls, d) Technology/Enabling Tools

    Engagement/Project Management:

    • Demonstrates expert project and process management skills; can effectively manage multiple large scale, complex projects at once
    • Manages multiple engagements concurrently, ensuring that the teams are following the appropriate project management disciplines
    • Sets strategy, establishes methodology and determines the appropriate work plan for a given client or internal team
    • Takes full ownership of risk mitigation and quality assurance
    • Oversees proper scoping and works with Tax Automation & Innovation team as appropriate to ensure client engagement terms are followed
    • Ensures Tax Automation & Innovation team delivers project on time and within budget by utilizing project management and client service skills
    • Collaborates with internal teams and client to understand the big picture when developing and implementing projects
    • Communicates with internal teams and clients to gather pertinent information when applicable
    • Can construct a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative business case for client to justify the investment and commitment of management time coupled with financial and human resources.
    • Navigates the client's political spectrum with finesse
    Client Service
    • Clearly identifies internal teams' and client expectations at the beginning of a project or engagement
    • Communicates status to the internal team or client in line with the frequency agreed upon
    • Helps internal teams and clients navigate complex issues
    • Other duties as required
    Market Presence
    • Is market-facing and involved in business development activities
    • Identifies opportunities for BDO to provide services and involves appropriate BDO resources
    • Networks internally to source referral opportunities in their market
    Practice Leadership
    • Leads Tax Automation & Innovation teams in working with local office personnel to direct the completion of projects
    • Manages Tax Automation & Innovation staff in completion of projects

    Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Education
    • Bachelor's degree required. Accounting, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science or Technology, preferred.
    • Graduate degree, preferred
    Experience
    • Ten (10) or more years of experience with technology or tax systems, required

    License/Certifications:

    • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ("EA") (or the equivalent of one of these designations), preferred
    • Alteryx, RPA or other Analytics software certification, preferred
    • ASC 740 tax accounting, consulting or income tax compliance preferred
    Software
    • Experience systems such as Oracle, Thomson Reuters, ONESOURCE, Longview, Corptax or GoSystems, preferred
    • Experience with RPA tools (UiPath, Blue Prism, PowerAutomate, Automation Anywhere, WinAutomation, etc.), preferred
    • Experience with ETL tools (Power Query, Power Pivot, Tableau Prep, etc.), preferred
    • Experience with visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, etc.), preferred
    • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, preferred

    • Demonstrated ability to work well remotely
    • Solid verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong people skills, including training/instruction with professionals at all levels
    • Executive presence and the ability to be primary contact for the client, prepare and conduct presentations to clients and potential clients
    • Strong client development/relationship-building skills
    • Demonstrated sound decision-making skills
    • Ability to work within teams
    • A basic understanding of international tax concepts as they impact reporting in accordance with ASC 740
    • A basic knowledge and skill level in engagement management including but not limited to, preparation of budgets, project plans, engagement letters, billing and collection, etc.
    • Ability to complete projects independently
    • Ability to travel 15-30% of the time

    Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

    Range: $150,000 - $400,000
