    Job Title: Staff Accountant

    Reports to: Controller

    The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) is the official charity of the United States Air Force (USAF) and United States Space Force (USSF). Incorporated in 1942, AFAS meets the unique needs of Airmen and Guardians through financial, educational, and community support to enhance the USAF and USSF missions.

    Job Summary:

    The Staff Accountant will work closely with the Controller to help maintain the financial integrity of AFAS, delivering consistent and accurate information on a timely basis. This staff person will be involved in many functions throughout AFAS including internal controls, month end close procedures, donation tracking, accounts payable, and data entry. The Staff Accountant should have a solid working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and strong financial analysis skills. The Staff Accountant should also be available to assist other departments with finance/accounting related requests as needed. To be successful in this position, the individual must be able to manage their time effectively, displaying a high level of organizational skill.

    This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position based in Arlington, VA. This is a hybrid position with a regular office presence 2-3 days a week. Office presence will ultimately be driven by mission requirements.

    The potential salary range for this position is $61,100 - $90,000 commensurate with experience and other compensable factors. Starting salary will not exceed midpoint of the salary range, which is $74,900.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Reconcile and maintain AFAS' receivables and allowance for doubtful accounts.
    • Review Income Statement accounts for accuracy and proper classifications.
    • Review AI generated Accounts Payable invoices in prior to synching to the general ledger in Business Central.
    • Ensure all automated ACH payments are recorded on a timely basis.
    • Ensure all checks received are entered into the proper system and deposited in a timely matter.
    • Review Controller's list of schedules monthly.
    • Assist Controller with month-end close procedures to ensure timely reporting.
    • Assist Controller with the IRS 990 filing and other tax/registration filings.
    • Provide general accounting support to the Controller and other departments.
    • Prepare various audit schedules requested by the auditors in conjunction with AFAS' annual financial audit, to include fulfilling auditor requests during on-site fieldwork.
    • Administer AFAS' internal control testing program, verifying that adequate controls are in place and being used appropriately. This includes the annual testing of controls.
    • Update data necessary for Charity Navigator on a yearly basis.
    • Support day to day project management tasks and weekly meetings as needed.
    • Provide Marketing & Development with Financial Reporting monthly.
    • Other Duties as Assigned: The above list is representative of all the key functions, but there are numerous other duties that will be assigned on an as needed basis.

    • Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office in a Windows environment.

    Preferred Skills, Education & Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree in accounting.
    • Six years of staff accounting experience can be substituted for bachelor's degree in accounting.
    • At least 2 years' experience in an accounting role. Experience with nonprofit organizations preferred.
    • U.S. work authorization required for this position.

    Communication Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of algebra, statistics, and geometry.

    Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
