    Description

    This is highly responsible professional work providing instruction and advice to health and fitness program participants of varying levels of fitness, skill and ability.

    Employees in this class are responsible for instructing program participants on appropriate exercise methods and techniques, and providing advice on diet and lifestyle modifications to obtain maximum health results.

    Employee is responsible for providing proper instruction as well as monitoring program participant's use of resistance training equipment, free weights, cardiovascular and other related fitness equipment.

    This position requires a high degree of interaction and communication with staff and the general public. All work is performed at various City facilities as assigned.

    Incumbent(s) may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

    Advise health and fitness program participants on exercise and diet modifications to promote healthier lifestyles and improve overall health.

    Conduct fitness assessments, orientation, and ongoing education for all existing and new program participants.


    Educate current and new program participants on the proper technique and usage of the weight training equipment and all cardiovascular equipment.

    Work fitness center floor, assisting participants with equipment, proper techniques, and answering general fitness questions.


    Instruct and monitor program participants in the proper technique and usage of all resistance training equipment, free weights, cardiovascular equipment, and all other selected equipment.

    Set up, put away, maintain all athletic and exercise equipment.

    Conduct periodic inspections on all athletic and exercise equipment inspections to ensure it is safe and operable.

    Promptly report of all accidents and potentially dangerous participant and equipment safety issues, and complete necessary paperwork.


    Maintain a hygienic fitness training environment by cleaning all fitness equipment between participants, picking up towels, sweeping/mopping floors, wiping down and performing other related light maintenance of equipment and environment.

    Contribute to a positive and friendly atmosphere for participants, staff, and supervision.

    Provide guided tours of the fitness centers and studios.


    Provide excellent customer service; to include fostering an environment which produces positive experience for program participants include creating and maintaining a friendly and inviting atmosphere, and making oneself accessible and visible to all program participants.


    Participate in promotion, marketing and implementation of events and programs; provide information and answer questions regarding the various facilities and activities carried out by the Department.

    Attend required staff meetings, trainings sessions and seminars.

    Provide exceptional internal and external customer service. Waits on the general public and co-workers, and provide information related to department and/or City policies and procedures.

    Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other employees, and the public using principles of good customer service; promotes and represents the City to the public in a courteous, helpful, diplomatic and professional manner.

    Resolves service problems by clarifying the customer's complaint; accessing validity of complaint, determining the cause of the problem; selecting and explaining the best solution to solve the problem; expediting correction or adjustment; following up to ensure resolution.


    Report to work regularly and on-time on a consistent basis unless provisions are made and approved by authorized City official(s) as related to Family Medical Leave, the American with Disability (ADA), Workers' Compensation or other federal, state, local, City or department laws, rules or regulations.

    Perform other related duties as required and directed.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Thorough knowledge of direct handling of free weights and other weight lifting and cardiovascular equipment including stationary bicycles, treadmills, rowers, stair climbers and tools for repair and maintenance.

    Considerable knowledge in the principles, practice, and instruction in modern methods and techniques to produce positive motivation and participation; the cardiovascular system, human anatomy, and exercise science; a variety of resistance training programming and injury prevention; facility, operation and use of fitness equipment; and knowledge and use of general office and cleaning products and supplies.


    Skilled in instructing others with fitness design and proper exercise technique; public relations; delivering superior customer service; modifying instruction and advise to fit the need and varying levels of fitness, skill and ability of program participants; and operation, proper use and adjustment of all fitness equipment for participants at all developmental stages.


    Ability to apply principals of influence such as motivation, incentive and leadership; plan, organize, instruct, supervise and assign program components; control large groups of people from diverse demographics; learn, follow and apply instructions, City policy, and Departmental Standard Operational Procedures in the delivery of programs and services; remain current on industry trends; work with little to no supervision; analyze and objectively assess situations to quickly determine proper course of action; visually monitor fitness areas; inspect and modify equipment; analyze and correct equipment and facility safety hazards; learn and adhere to departmental and facility safety and emergency protocol; and use standard office equipment.

    Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, maintain effective working relationships with employees, peers, supervisors and the public.

    Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and effective manner and to use judgment and discretion in disseminating information.

    Ability to interact politely and professionally with co-workers, City officials, and the general public, including members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or familial status.

    Ability to provide superior customer service and respond to difficult and sensitive co-workers and citizen inquiries and complaints.

    Ability to think, learn, grasp new ideas and learn the operation and policy and procedures of the City and the assigned department.


    Education, Experience & Requirements:

    Must possess and maintain a personal trainer or group fitness certification from American Council of Exercise (ACE), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA, American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or other accreditation certification program throughout employment, and have at least two (2) or more years of paid professional work experience in the area(s) of Health, Exercise and/or Fitness.

    A Bachelor's Degree in the area(s) of Health, Exercise and/or Fitness from an accredited college or university is preferred.

    This is a part-time position and requires the employee to work varying hours including evenings, weekends and holidays as required.

    Requires Certification in First Aid and CPR upon hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License and satisfactory driving record throughout employment.


    Preference will be given to applicants with experience instructing yoga, Pilates, stretch and mobility, and low impact aerobic fitness classes for seniors.

    The employee is frequently required to use hands to fingers; handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

    The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise frequency level in the work environment is varied, moderate to high.
