- Strategic Leadership: Collaborate with the VP of Sales to define and implement sales strategies, objectives, and processes that align with the company's overall vision and goals. Develop a deep understanding of market trends, customer needs, and competitive landscape to position Thorlabs as a market leader.
- Sales Team Management: Lead and mentor the North American technical sales team, including field sales professionals, technical support, solutions specialists, and project managers. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, teamwork, and high performance.
- Sales Targets & Performance: Work closely with the sales team to set, monitor, and achieve sales targets. Regularly review sales performance data, provide constructive feedback, and implement strategies to maximize sales effectiveness and profitability.
- Key Account Strategy: Identify, develop, and maintain relationships with key accounts. Understand their unique needs and challenges and provide customized solutions that demonstrate Thorlabs' value proposition and technical superiority.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with internal departments such as Marketing, Product Development, Customer Development, and Customer Service to ensure a cohesive approach to market expansion and customer satisfaction. Be the voice of the sales team in cross-functional meetings and projects.
- Technical Expertise & Support: Ensure that the sales team possesses the technical knowledge and skills required to effectively sell and support Thorlabs' products. Oversee the development and delivery of training programs and support materials.
- Budget & Resource Management: Develop and manage the North Americas sales budget. Ensure optimal allocation of resources, including personnel and expenses.
- Reporting & Analysis: Provide regular reports on sales performance, market trends, customer feedback, and other key metrics to the VP of Sales and executive leadership team. Use data-driven insights to guide decision-making and strategy adjustments.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Physics, Engineering, or a related field. An advanced degree or MBA is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of sales experience in the photonics or related high-tech industry, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Strong technical background with an understanding of photonics products and their applications.
- Proven track record of achieving sales targets and driving sales growth in a technical sales environment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor a diverse team.
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Willingness to travel extensively to meet with customers, attend conferences, and support the sales team.
- Travel to visit key customer/accounts as well as attend tradeshows and visit other Thorlabs offices as required (estimated travel up to 40%)
- Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
- Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in sales and leadership in photonics technical sales and customer support.
- A Bachelor's degree in Optics, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or a related engineering field; advanced degree
- preferred. Project Management Professional certificate (PMP) preferred.
