Position Summary
The Estimator I is an early-career role focused on learning civil construction estimating while providing hands-on support to the estimating team. This position assists with quantity takeoffs, plan review, data entry, and bid preparation for civil and sitework projects including earthwork, underground utilities, and paving. The role is designed to build a path toward independently leading smaller bids and progressing to Estimator II as proficiency, independence, and judgment grow.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating Support & Takeoffs
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, utilities (wet and dry), paving, and small structures using plans, specifications, and digital takeoff tools.
- Assist Estimator II and the Chief Estimator with building self-perform estimates, including labor, equipment, materials, and basic production rates.
- Read and interpret drawings, specifications, addenda, and geotechnical reports to help identify scope, phasing, and basic risks.
- Enter quantities and cost items into HeavyBid (or other estimating tools) under guidance, following standard item and cost-code structures.
Bid Preparation & Coordination
- Help assemble bid documents, bid forms, clarifications, and supporting schedules for internal reviews and formal submissions.
- Request, receive, and organize subcontractor and supplier quotations; maintain quote logs and file structures.
- Track addenda, ensure drawing and specification sets are current, and clearly communicate changes to the team.
- Support bid day activities, including last-minute quote tabulation, data entry, and updating bid summaries under direction.
Cost Data, Job-Cost Feedback & Learning
- Participate in post-bid and post-job reviews to compare estimated versus actual quantities, production, and costs.
- Help update standard crews, production rates, and cost data in coordination with more senior estimators.
- Complete required training on Bluebeam, HeavyBid basics, and company procedures within the first 6–9 months in the role.
- Seek feedback and coaching from Estimator II/Chief Estimator, field superintendents, and project managers to better understand how estimates translate to field performance.
Collaboration, Safety & Culture
- Maintain clear, professional communication with estimating team members, project managers, field leaders, and support staff.
- Demonstrate reliability around bid schedules and deadlines; proactively communicate when help or clarification is needed.
- Support the company's safety culture by understanding how jobsite logistics, access, and safety constraints impact production, methods, and cost.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- 1–3 years of experience in civil construction estimating, field engineering, or construction operations preferred.
- Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent field experience will be considered.
- Exposure to heavy civil/sitework projects (earthwork, underground utilities, paving) is a plus.
Technical Skills
- Basic understanding of civil construction means and methods for earthwork, utilities, and paving.
- Foundational plan-reading skills; able to navigate drawings, details, and specifications with guidance.
- Familiarity with Bluebeam or similar PDF markup/takeoff tool; expected to become proficient within the first 6–9 months.
- Willingness to learn HeavyBid and digital takeoff/modeling tools (e.g., AGTEK or similar) as assigned.
- Comfortable with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and basic file organization practices.
Core Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in calculations and data entry.
- Curious, coachable mindset with a strong desire to learn estimating and field operations.
- Organized and able to manage multiple tasks in support of several bids with oversight.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
