    Position Information


    Plans, directs and coordinates the conduct of medicolegal investigations of circumstances leading to accidental, violent, unattended or unexplained deaths; plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and maintenance of the City and County Morgue; and performs other related duties as required.


    Current Vacancy:
    There is one (1) vacancy with the Department of the Medical Examiner.

    This position is responsible for directing the investigative staff engaged in the investigation of circumstances leading to violent and unexplained deaths and supervising the staff and operation of the morgue.

    The Supervising Medicolegal Investigator is responsible for supervising all investigative staff.

    This position will supervise and participate in the conduct of medicolegal investigations of deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner's office.

    May also be assigned to conduct medicolegal investigations in highly complex and/or high profile cases and/or for training of subordinates.

    This position is usually assigned to the first shift, which is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This position is required to work other hours, including evening, night, weekends, and holidays when necessary.


    Special Work Requirements:

    Health hazards:
    Exposure to contagious diseases, including an increased risk of certain communicable diseases such as hepatitis and meningitis.

    Exposure to various chemical and gaseous environments, especially during the investigation of a traffic fatality or at the scene of a fire.


    Unpleasantness:

    Frequently required to be in an enclosed area for long periods of time with decomposed bodies and remains and is thus exposed to putrid odors, insects, insect larva, and other animal vectors associated with decomposing bodies.


    Physical hazards:

    May be required to go directly to the body of the deceased, which is often times located in such remote places as mountain cliffs and terrain, valleys, ravines, and burial caves.

    May be required to enter smoldering dwellings with exposed electrical wiring and water-soaked and charred floors immediately after a fire.

    May be required to enter all construction sites where an industrial death has occurred. Must cope with dangerous vehicular traffic for all traffic fatalities. May be required to lift items up to 40-50 pounds.

    • Salary is commensurate with applicable experience:$6,177 to $7,226 per month (SR-26),pending approval and subject to funding availability. This position may be eligible fora relocation allowance.

    Minimum Qualification Requirements


    EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:


    Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field.


    Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States.

    In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided.

    Verification Requirement:
    You must submit evidence of your Bachelor's degree in order to be given credit.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:


    Four years of progressively responsible professional experience in conducting medicolegal investigations, two of which shall have been representative of the journey level or higher.

    Such experience must also include, or be supplemented by, work experience demonstrating aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects.


    LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

    • Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
    • Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) as a Registered Diplomate (certification must be maintained on a current basis thereafter)
