    Job Summary :

    The Phlebotomist and functions as a laboratory professional who performs specimen collection techniques or specimen collection instructions that include, venipuncture, capillary draws, sweat chloride collections, urine collection instruction and specimen culture collection instruction.

    Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks:

    · Promotes professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.

    · Ensure specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.

    · Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.

    · Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.

    · Attains required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.

    · Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.

    · Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and specimen transport.

    · Responsible for specimen accessioning as assigned.

    · Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.

    · Performs proper drug screen collection and processing as assigned.

    · Answers laboratory department phone calls.

    · Demonstrates ability to recognize emergent conditions and reacts appropriately.

    · Provides phlebotomy services in a professional and patient centered manner.

    · Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.

    · Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.

    · Promotes service excellence and growth of the laboratory.

    · May work with multiple departments within the laboratory or across the hospital/health system.

    · Performs sweat chloride collections as assigned.

    · Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.

    · Responsible for other duties as assigned.

    Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

    · Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform phlebotomy procedures appropriate to the age of the patient.

    · Must have basic computer skills.

    · Demonstrates professional behavior and works collaboratively with the team and all stakeholders.

    · Maintains good communications and a suitable working relationship between the phlebotomy section and other laboratory sections, other hospital employees, patients, and visitors.
