    Position Summary

    The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is looking to add a Corrections Deputy to their team to assist in maintaining safety and security of the correctional facility, the county courthouse and their occupants. This person will also conform to all policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Office, Jail, Oregon Jail Standards and Oregon Revised Statutes.

    $ $44.42 depending on experience*

    *Lincoln County follows Oregon Pay Equity laws in reviewing education and experience for wage offer.

    Added financial incentive will be given to deputies with an AA or BS degree from an accredited university, and deputies who have Intermediate or Advanced certifications from DPSST. Those with verified translation abilities are also eligible for additional incentive.

    Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities

    Intake processing:

    • Conduct initial custody assessment for acceptance into the facility which includes assessing medical condition, mental health status and intoxication level.
    • Perform a cursory search of accepted inmates to detect illicit drugs and dangerous items including weapons and contraband.
    • Perform an inventory of and accept responsibility for inmate property and accounting of their money in accordance with Oregon Revised Statute.
    • Obtain thorough and accurate inmate commitment forms from the arresting officer, such as probable cause affidavits, parole/probation detainers, warrants, fugitive complaints, citations, and intake sheets.
    • Classify and house inmates according to degree of severity of crime, past/current behavior, vulnerability, predatory level, medical/ mental health needs, gender, age, gang affiliation and current inmate population. Review and adjust classification/housing assignments of inmates.
    • Booking process to include photograph, fingerprints, additional medical and mental health screening, biographical questionnaire, and entry of criminal charges.
    • Evaluate and perform unclothed body search of individuals, detects, and identify scars, marks, tattoos and medical conditions.

    Application of physical/chemical restraints, administration of medication and handling of individuals with a mental illness:

    • Apply physical and chemical restraints.
    • Monitor and conduct frequent inspections to prevent suicide and accidental death.
    • Perform first aid/CPR while waiting for emergency medical response.
    • Set up and administer medication and medical devices as issued or ordered by facility or other medical facilities medical staff.
    • Supervise deficient or mentally ill inmates with compassion and patience.
    • Conduct death notifications.

    Technology/equipment/training:

    • Complete comprehensive data entry into multiple local, state, and federal data systems.
    • Working knowledge of computerized filing systems including digital archiving.
    • Operate computerized door, audio, and visual control systems.
    • Train for emergencies such as partial/full system failure.
    • Monitor alarms within the jail and courthouse.
    • Receive, count, and issue receipts for money placed into inmates account.
    • Receive, count, and issue receipts for money received for bail.
    • Monitor, record, and control inmate activity and movement.
    • Perform and record welfare checks.
    • Conduct area searches.
    • Train employees in specific area(s) of expertise.
    • Familiarize new employees with Sheriff's Office policies and procedures.
    • Coordinate the maintenance of vehicles to ensure they are in safe operative condition.

    Customer service:

    • Assist the public, media, and other agencies via telephone, computer or in person.
    • Comply with public records laws.
    • Schedule appointments with service providers.
    • Prepare media releases.
    • Facilitate educational programs.
    • Counsel and refer inmates to appropriate service providers.
    • Manage crisis and respond to incidents inside/outside of facility.
    • Coordinate emergency response from outside agencies.

    Transport, criminal investigations, and specialized assignments:

    • Perform specialized assignments as needed according to employee's skills and abilities.
    • Conduct armed transports of adult and juvenile inmates.
    • Perform high risk and mental health transports.
    • Facilitate and supervise court appearances.
    • Conduct criminal and disciplinary investigations.
    • Prepare detailed written reports of inmate conduct/criminal behavior.

    Typical Qualifications

    Minimum Education Level

    High School Diploma / GED

    Specifics: Two years college level education in law enforcement or related field preferred; at least 21 years of age and reside within two hours of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

    Certifications

    Specifics: Must meet minimum DPSST requirements. If non-certified in Oregon, must be able to complete the 6-week academy at DPSST. Must achieve and maintain CPR/first aid certification and become LEDS/NCIC certified.

    Driver's License

    Specifics: Job requires frequent use of county vehicles. Must possess a valid Oregon driver's license with an insurable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of date of hire.

    Desirable Qualifications: Must be free of conviction of a crime designated under the law where the conviction occurred as being punishable as a felony or as a crime for which a maximum term of imprisonment of more than one (1) year may be imposed; or of violating any law involving the unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacture of a controlled substance, narcotic, or dangerous drug. Dishonorable or undesirable discharge from the military is cause for disqualification. Must be able to pass a law enforcement background check. A psychological assessment will also be administered.

    Knowledge of:

    • Administrative procedures, pertinent federal, state and local laws and ordinances sufficient to carry out duties.
    • Criminal law, case law, judicial system, jail standards and related jail statutes

    Skill or ability to:

    • Exercise sound judgment in all situations.
    • Operate firearms, various camera systems, operate vehicles at normal and high speeds under stress, operate radio equipment, utilize Tasers and other less lethal tools, email, voice mail, and computers.
    • Obtain information through interviews, interrogations and observations.
    • Prepare information suitable for court cases.
    • Cope with stressful, dangerous, and high liability situations with respect to individual rights.
    • Gain cooperation of the inmates, ability to handle difficult prisoners with patience and firmness, ability to use physical force when necessary and ability to withstand verbal abuse.
    • Learn the operation of a totally computerized jail system.
    • Achieve DPSST certification within one year of hire.
    • Work within department policies and procedures, operations, training, and Oregon law.
    • Supervise inmates in a modern and direct supervision correctional facility.
    • Achieve and maintain First Aid/CPR certification and become LEDS/NCIC certified. Must be able to obtain and maintain Notary Public.
    • Possess physical capability to handle high mobility demands.
    • Conduct investigations, collect, evaluate, and analyze facts to draw accurate conclusions.
    • Makes arrests, serve arrest warrants, write accurate arrest reports, testify in grand jury, hearings, and trials as a witness.
    • Requires ability to handle extreme stress and make immediate decisions regarding life and property.
    • Render credible testimony in a court of law. Must be able to perform the duties of a corrections officer.
    • Convey information, ideas, and facts both orally and in writing to supervisors, colleagues, and individuals, inside and outside the county, using language and a format the audience will best understand.
    • Utilize computers and other technology to communicate in written and verbal forms (e.g., word processing, texts, emails, spreadsheets, department-specific software).
    • Effectively relate well with others, including supervisors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the county. Exhibit a professional manner in dealing with others and working to maintain constructive working relationships.
    • Take personal responsibility for the quality and timeliness of work. Show up to work on time, and follows instructions, policies, and procedures. Meet productivity standards, deadlines, and work schedules.
