    Department: Facility Services

    Location: Based at the Hattiesburg Zoo and Serengeti Springs Waterpark.

    Shift: Full-time: Will include a variety of weekdays, nights, weekends and holidays.

    Reports to: Director of Facilities, Engineering, & Physical Plant

    Summary: Under direction of Director of Engineering, Facility Services and Physical Plant: Assists and oversees planning, oversight of contracted services, performance of facilities services, maintenance and construction activities, as well as oversight of any applicable personnel necessary to maintain the upkeep, repair and construction of Commission facilities. Executes work within policies and procedures for cost effective and efficient control and upkeep of HVAC, mechanical, electrical, fire suppression, and security systems. Supervises, administers, evaluates and participates as needed in all internal and external maintenance, both in-house and out-sourced performance. Makes recommendations to Director of EFSPP for improvement, enhancement and variations. Rigorously monitors efficiency of departmental operations including equipment acquisition and use, preventative maintenance, construction, personnel and supplies. Performs related functions as required.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Upkeep of all attractions, equipment and grounds.
    • Inspects, operates and maintains mechanical and electrical systems as needed.
    • Oversees engineering, mechanical, maintenance and repair functions of the interior and exterior aspects of venues and grounds.
    • Recruits, trains and supervises assigned full and part-time personnel engaged in maintenance, construction and landscaping activities.
    • Recommends contract criteria for maintenance sub-contractors and supervises said activities to assure quality of service and personnel.
    • Develops evaluation criteria for maintenance sub-contractors. Makes recommendations and reports to Director regarding results of evaluation.
    • Knowledge of and coordination of physical event setups with regard to floor load, rigging point loads and point accuracy, electrical power locations, capacities and distribution as well as compliance with fire and safety regulations.
    • Establishes and executes preventative maintenance programs for zoo and waterpark attractions equipment and systems, exclusive of IT and AV.
    • Inventories and monitors usage of Commission maintenance equipment and supplies.
    • Assists Director in preparation of budget for labor, material and services necessary for various projects including construction.
    • Performs routine service operations of facility systems.
    • Able to operate vehicular equipment such as van, forklift and hydraulic power lift in performance of work.
    • May be needed to resolve maintenance and other problems, Commission-wide, on occasion.
    • Communicates well with all Commission Departments to ensure smooth flow of activity.
    • Performs building security functions, as needed.
    • Performs other duties as required by Director.
    • Must be available for evening, weekend and holiday work as required.

    Qualification Requirements

    Education and Work Experience

    • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible supervisory duties within building maintenance, physical plant, construction or other applicable maintenance field.
    • Documentable experience in electrical installations and/or repairs, structural modifications, plumbing, mechanical work and facility maintenance equipment.
    • Graduation from high school or accredited equivalency program.

    Essential Job Qualifications

    • The following skills will be considered: planning and coordinating work schedules, establishing priorities, planning and directing work schedules, coordination of multiple activities with overlapping and simultaneous operations and deadlines. Other skills desired include the ability to interpret complex service orders into work plans for staff, able to work under pressure, and ability to deal effectively and courteously with co-workers, guests and the general public.
    • This position requires specific knowledge of preventative maintenance, staff leadership, and work planning. This position requires general knowledge of facility maintenance, supply purchasing, and tools, materials, equipment used in building operations.
    • The qualified applicant should have an interest in the attractions industry and a willingness to work flexible and sometimes irregular hours. Professional certifications will be considered.
    • A valid driver's license is required.

    Physical requirements:

    • Body mobility to walk, kneel, crouch, and bend in order to physically provide maintenance.
    • Able to climb ladders up to 20-feet high and utilize mechanical lifts up to 60+ feet high.
    • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate tools.
    • Sufficient strength to lift and carry equipment, supplies and materials required in performance of routine maintenance activities.
    • Stamina to stand while doing physical labor.
    • Tolerance to work under adverse conditions such as among dust, dirt and cleaning agent odors and outdoors in heat and cold.

    • Demonstrate supervisory, motivational and leadership skills.
    • Anticipate and effectively deal with a significantly large number of details with concurrent and overlapping deadlines for completion.
    • Plan, service and supervise public and commercial settings.
    • Identify potential problems and make plans for corrective action.
    • Communicate effectively by oral and written methods.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow staff, facility users, outside contractors and the general public.
    • Plan and evaluate the work of staff as well as outside contractors.
