This non-exempt position involves general firefighting duties such as emergency response to aircraft and structural fire emergencies as well as medical emergencies, hazardous materials spills, and water rescue. The work involves routine inspection and maintenance of fire apparatus, fire station facilities, and firefighting equipment. Additionally, the position includes performing fire inspections, training, and drilling in the use of firefighting equipment, and participating in public relations events. At times the work is performed in extreme temperature conditions and danger for prolonged periods of time. An employee in this classification exercises some independence in the performance of duties and receives close supervision from a supervisor. This individual works on a non-standard, rotating 24-hour shift schedule.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Responds to a variety of aircraft related emergencies such as crashes, in-flight emergencies, fuel spills, etc.

2. Performs ramp or runway standby to ensure safe operations for air carriers during peak flying periods.

3. Functions as a driver/operator of the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) equipment and maintains fire vehicles and equipment in a constant state of readiness.

4. Operates nozzles and directs firefighting streams, climbs ladders, uses chemical extinguishers, pry bars, hooks, rescue lines and other equipment.

5. Performs rescue and extrication operations on aircraft, structures, and vehicles with heavy rescue tools.

6. Responds to medical calls including aircraft accidents, personal injury collisions, and medical emergencies.

7. Performs salvage operations; including the removal of water and debris and assists in the protection of aircraft crash scene evidence.

8. Performs fire protection standbys on medical evacuation aircraft, welding and cutting operations, and other safety related events.

9. Inspects airport facilities including aircraft ramps, airport buildings and facilities, and fire extinguishers to insure compliance with local fire codes.

10. Participates in group and individual training sessions to include live fire exercises, aircraft rescue firefighting, water rescue, emergency medical services, physical fitness testing and related topics.

11. Maintains skill proficiency through the OAA Fire/Rescue in-house training program. Conducts and attends in-house training classes as assigned.

12. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the fire station and vehicles including; cleaning, washing, painting, minor repair and improvements, and snow removal around ARFF facility.

13. Performs minor administrative tasks such as record keeping, report writing, etc., as assigned.

14. Follows all OAA Personnel Policies, Department Standard Operating Procedures, and Labor Agreements.

15. Communicates through the use of company radio equipment.

16. Accomplishes assigned tasks in a competent and thorough manor.

17. Must meet all FAA Part 139 training requirements to include maintaining OAA movement area certification.

18. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Graduation from high school or G.E.D. certificate is required. We prefer completion of an Associate's Degree in Fire Service Management or other closely related field from an accredited institution. College requirement may be substituted by either of the following:
  1. Two (2) years of military service.
  2. Two (2) years of paid experience as a firefighter or Emergency Medical Technician.
• Must be a State of Nebraska certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Candidate must maintain these certifications during employment with the Omaha Airport Authority.
• Must be certified by IFSAC or Pro Board as Fire Fighter I and II, and Hazardous Materials Operations.
• Must complete an IFSAC or Pro Board Airport Firefighter certification course or an FAA approved Part 139 Basic Firefighter course as a condition of employment.
• Non-movement and Movement area certification required by the end of the qualification/probationary period.
• Thorough knowledge of fire equipment, vehicles and their operation and use is required.
• Ability to speak and write clearly.
• Ability to work well with others, to follow orders and react rapidly in emergency situations.
• The ability to effectively deal with co-workers, airport tenants and general public.
• Possess and maintain a valid Nebraska or Iowa driver's license.
• Physical strength, skills and agility necessary to carry out rescue activities including water rescue, operate heavy equipment and perform other duties of the position.
• Must complete NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 within first year of employment
• Three years of civil or military aircraft firefighting experience is preferred.
• IFSAC/Pro-Board Certification as Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I or higher is preferred.
