Job Summary

The English Language Learning (ELL) Instructor plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive language instruction and support to non-native English speakers enrolled in our college. This position requires a deep understanding of language acquisition theories, cultural sensitivity, and effective teaching methodologies to facilitate the linguistic and academic development of students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Northcentral Technical College (NTC) is a customer-focused, accessible provider of innovative life-long learning. As a member of a learning team, faculty report to a designated dean and participate in program, school, interschool, and College-wide team activities. Faculty provide instruction, expertise, and leadership within their program and content area. Faculty are expected to remain current in their area of expertise and in the field of education through professional growth and continuous learning activities. Faculty contribute to the College community as exemplified by committee involvement, participation in leadership activities, academic advisement of students, and sponsorship of student activities. Faculty members are also encouraged to be involved in the NTC College through various service opportunities in community organizations or through other community activities.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Curriculum Development: Design and develop engaging and culturally relevant lesson plans and instructional materials tailored to the needs and proficiency levels of English language learners.

Instructional Delivery: Deliver dynamic and interactive English language lessons using a variety of teaching methods, technologies, and authentic materials to promote language acquisition and fluency.

Language Assessment: Administer and evaluate language assessments to determine students' proficiency levels, track progress, and identify areas for improvement.

Individualized Support: Provide personalized support and feedback to students through one-on-one tutoring sessions, language labs, and academic counseling to address specific language challenges and foster academic success.

Cultural Competency: Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment that respects and celebrates students' diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

Collaboration: Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to integrate language learning strategies across the curriculum and support students' academic and professional goals. Provide guidance and support to program staff in grant management, reporting, and compliance activities.

Professional Development: Stay abreast of current trends, research, and best practices in English language teaching and participate in professional development opportunities to enhance instructional effectiveness and student outcomes.

Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and performance assessments, and assist with program planning, evaluation, and accreditation processes as needed.

Minimum Qualifications Required

In limited circumstances, NTC may consider a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position.

Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Applied Linguistics, Education, or a related field.

TESOL certification (e.g., CELTA, TEFL, TESOL) preferred.

Qualified at time of, and throughout, employment as an instructor by the Wisconsin Technical College System. Must also meet Higher Learning Commission requirements, accreditation standards, and/or licensing standards where applicable.

Experience:

Previous experience teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language to adult learners in a college or university setting.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to adapt instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of students.
Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
Proficiency in instructional technology and learning management systems (e.g. Canvas, Zoom, Burlington English)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, including language skills, reasoning and mathematical abilities are essential.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, write, analyze and interpret complex documents; present topics to internal and external individuals of all levels.

Math Skills:

Ability to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to critically think and solve problems involving a variety of concrete variables with limited standardization; interpret written, oral and diagrammed instructions.

Technical Skills:

Ability to manage and track document changes; create, modify and format templates and files; ability to use multiple computer screens and multitask in several computer applications.

Customer Service Skills:

Ability to actively listen, discern key information, and respond professionally; ask follow up or clarifying questions to diffuse escalated situations and offer appropriate problem resolution when necessary.
