    CT technologists utilize computerized tomography (CT) scanners to produce cross-section images of patients' internal organs and tissues for the diagnosis of medical issues.

    Must be able to accurately interpret a physician's scanning instructions, administer contrast materials, prepare and operate the CT scan equipment and position the patient to capture the appropriate images

    Responsibilities & Standards
    Clerical responsibilities (in the absence of a C.T.

    clerk-typist):
    Schedules examinations and insures and maintains daily patient flow in an expeditious manner according to department's schedule.

    Schedules appropriate number(s) of specific exam type, consistent with departmental schedules and the most efficient use of personnel and equipment time.

    Questions physicians or secretaries regarding exam, patient history, and or relevant information required to determine the correct level(s) for scanning and for determination of contrast administration, if indicated.

    Instructs secretaries/physicians on specific instructions for the patient to include preparation and expected waiting times.

    The instructions and/or waiting times are specified per departmental procedures.

    Pre-exam responsibilities:


    Greet patient courteously within specified time of patient presentation of requisition by receptionist with less than two legitimate (as determined by supervisor) complaints in a six-month period.

    Introduce self to patient and instruct the patient regarding your role, the exam they are having and answer any questions relevant to that exam.

    Review patient's requisition and/or history, determining the appropriate supplies needed and/or direction given to patient for appropriate undressing.

    Prepare patient and assist in removing obstructing clothing and opaque objects.
    Prepare room and/or equipment per departmental procedure per exam.
    Performance of exam and provides care to patients ranging in age from childhood, through adolescence, adulthood and geriatrics.

    The technologist must possess the ability to assess the requirements of the patients as they pertain to age, and must perform examinations as defined in Department Policies, in a manner consistent with the patient's age.

    Assist patient on or off scanning table in accordance with departmental safety guidelines and/or correct utilization of body mechanics.
    Position patient appropriately for adequate scanning, utilizing appropriate restraining devices if required.

    Select proper technical factors on individual patient basis; select appropriate computerized parameters and radiation imaging levels after consultation with radiologist.

    Operates the equipment as directed with proper care to minimize equipment breakdown, delivering proper radiation protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards.

    In the performance of exams requiring contrast media, intravenously, arterially, orally or by other method, the preparation and administration of these materials should be by departmental prescribed standards and/or safety standards with 100% accuracy.

    During examination, observe patient's condition and if unusual, report to attending physician, radiologist or other appropriate personnel.


    In the event that the patient experiences' crisis, summon the nearest available help or initiate emergency medical procedures without fail.

    Practice sterile technique and/or be cognizant of infection control practices at all times, as instructed by departmental prescribed standards and/or safety standards.

    Upon completion of exams, dismiss patient or provide for transportation to assigned ward or unit.

    Quality Control/record keeping/Quality Assurance:
    Scan, store and prepare images for transferal to hard copy or reconstruction/enhancement for radiologist.
    Process or transport cassettes or recording media for processing.
    Perform all related data collection and entry functions as directed by Departmental Policy.

    Assist or provide for the permanent recording of significant functional and/or anatomical or pathologic data obtained or any pertinent information, which may be used for utilization review or state request.

    Perform final check of all films for quality and completeness of requested exam as specified by departmental procedure manual.
    Check all films with radiologist as specified by departmental procedure.
    Obtain and call out wet readings as specified by request and/or departmental procedure.
    Arrange for transportation of patient to appropriate location.

    Equipment maintenance and surveillance:


    Maintain and utilize CAT scan equipment or x-ray equipment as instructed or for its intended purpose, per departmental guidelines, manufacturers' instructions and departmental procedure manual.

    Performs cleaning procedures on x-ray equipment between patient exams as required per departmental and/or hospital infection control guidelines.

    Inform supervisory technologist, assistant chief/floor coordinator or manager of the department of diagnostic imaging of any malfunctions in the equipment to minimize any potential accidents, as required by the departmental safety procedures, as well as to prevent voiding of current service contracts.


    Maintain adequate stock of pertinent supplies:
    Establish needs for daily assignment, per departmental procedure guidelines.
    Notify supervisory technologist, assistant chief, or manager of diagnostic imaging of impending supply shortages.

    Maintain adequate supply of markers, cassettes, gloves, or other shielding/protection devices as required, specified or discussed at departmental safety, infection control, or Inservice education meetings.


    Other Radiologic exam requirements:
    In the event or occasion where lengthy downtime of equipment exists or for extended preventive maintenance, the C.T. technologist where trained or licensed, may be utilized in other areas of the department of diagnostic imaging.

    The CT scan technologist, if qualified, will perform in the area of special procedures, or assist in his/her limited capacity in that area for a smooth and efficient work flow.

    Is responsible for on-call responsibilities as assigned per departmental policy.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

    Completed an accredited educational program related to the radiology field and is registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

    Experience

    :

    Minimum 1 year experience in CT
    Certification/Licensure:

    Current BLS certification, Current Mass DPH Radiologic Technologist License

    ,
    Current ARRT registered certification in Radiography with RT(R) designation,

    Current ARRT registered certification in Computed Tomography with RT,(CT) designation.
    • Required for all new hires or trainees after 18 months.
    Software/Hardware:

    Meditech experience preferred.
